Ok, I apologize. This isn't really windsurfing related. Except that's what brought me here to the Gorge. I bought a beater minivan near PDX and drove out here, now I need to get back for a 5pm thursday flight to the wife (the van is staying here permanently). It looks like the Amtrak service heading into PDX is super unreliable, so other suggestions welcome. Money, beer, whatever it takes to get close to PDX from White Salmon.

In the meantime, enjoy the attached picture. I'm moving in, and needed to go shopping. Food, furniture, some toys. But it always takes longer than you think, so always remember to get "just the essentials".

By the way, I don't care when I show up on Thursday, as long as I can make it to PDX. 10am, 1pm, whatever...

HMMM...Amtrac's Thurs schedule is leaving Bingen at 9:34 and arrives in Portland at 11:30 or so. Seems like a no brainer to me....expecially if you have no schedules to maintain.

Greyhound also goes to Portland, looks like there are three buses on any given Thursday rolling through Hood River.

Hi Fitek

I have taken Amtarc a number of times to Portland and it has always been reliable even ini the winter.

It is a beautiful way to see the Gorge and you get off at the historic Union station. Then walk a few blocks and take the light rail right to the airport.

If all else fails and you miss the train and the bus give me a call and, if it is not windy, I may be able to give you a ride to PDX since I need to make a Costco trip.

The CAT bus leaves Hood River on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 am and takes you to the Gateway Station where you can get the MAX to the airport. It only costs $8 I think.

You will be a little early for your flight but the bus is cheap and very reliable.

You can rent a car from enterprise, in hood river or the dalles, and drop it off at PDX (usually no drop off fee) for 24 hours for about 40 bucks

Thanks guys. I didn't realize there were so many options.

I only knew about the Amtrak before, and I've been checking it's on time performance-- sometimes its been as much as 9 hours late, which would be a problem.

The enterprise rental is $40/day but there's a $100 one way fee, which kills the deal. I think I could convince one of the neighbors to drive me for that much, hehe.

Try other rental agencies. The drop-off fees depend on who needs more cars where, and can range from hundreds to zero.

I think there's only one other car rental place in HR, and it's small.

Bah, Amtrak won't let you reserve after the scheduled time of the train. So even though it showed up at 12:15, I couldn't get the ticket.

Some folks were nice enough to give me a ride to HR Greyhound.

Greyhound is amusing. I try to buy the ticket online. It says I need to call. So I do. 30 minutes later, the CSR says I can't call, I need to go to the station. I don't recall a Greyhound "station" existing. So I go to the historic railroad office, and in fact there is no station.

::rolling eyes::

The Amtrak conductor suggested that I reserve a ticket for the next day as a workaround. Apparently Amtrak still operates like it's 1899.
