|
|
In my opinion, Windsurfing includes at least 4 different sports: board sailing, bump & jump, wave sailing, and freestyle. (I'm a longtime board sailor with only a little chop riding skill, no jumping or wave sailing experience and no freestyle experience.)
I think a case could be made for counting windsurf racing (whether course or slalom) as a 5th windsurfing sport.
My board sailing is developed enough to include land sailing (snow, ice & parking lot sailing) which requires two very different "boards" and might be regarded as the 6th and 7th windsurfing sports.
All of these sports use universal joints & wishbone booms for sailing. Are there more? |

IF racing gets to be the 5th than speed should be the 6th! |

speed sailing for sure would be a distinct discipline. I think the case can also be made for SUP windsurfing, where you're using your sail but you're using a convertible/"wind-sup" SUP board and doing something in between wavesailing and board sailing.

Wave sailing, like its counterpart, surfing, has two distinct categories: Shortboard and Longboard (SUP wave sailing). Often it is different folk doing these two categories, or sub-categories, if you will. They are extremely different although they both deal with windsurfing waves. |

And then there's the sport of just looking at your equipment like I have been doing most of the Summer! It has been a horrible Summer for wind here in Chicago. |

7 ) Sand or beach sailing, using a skateboard like board with balloon wheels.
8 ) Ice sailing, same board but with blades on it. |

You need to move, I'm on day 44 (of 46), of what a lot of people have called a poor
year in the Gorge. A day counts as better than 45 minutes
planing in at least 1 foot strap, on a 6.7 (used exclusively 1 time this year)
or smaller. I probably won't maintain a 95% average the entire season
(like Guy does) as I usually leave in October. Just for reference, my
average sail size in June was 3.7, in July, 4.7, and so far in August
around 5.2 (yes I am cheap, ergo the 6.7)
Oh, Formula and Slalom are definitely different sports (not that I
currently do either).

It never stops.
Formula racing can almost be divided into "light wind" and high wind divisions.
Slalom can be flat water or surf slaloms, although the latter hasn't been raced in a few dozen years.
Wave sailing, do we score wave RIDING or do we score manuevers done in the surf zone? And which get's higher points?
How can we rate bump n jump? Biggest jumps (DaleCook) or trickiest moves?
Is Defi Wind a speed event or a slalom event? It looks more like a huge get together.
And how do we classify he purists? Like those who sail from AgateBeach to the Farallones, or Coyote to Alameda? |

bummer... flying out there today for the Cal - Northwestern game this weekend... will probably rent a hobie cat from NU sailing center just to get on the lake... although probably not a great idea with thunderstorms in the forecast?
One day would like to windsurf on Lake Michigan! _________________ Kevin Kan

don't forget the submarine category... idiots who rig too small sails and too small boards and launch at the docks in Berkeley... and i guess we'd have to add a foiling category now, too to balance it out. _________________ Kevin Kan
