Rowena Fire Oregon - 2014
Important Notice: Fire officials are asking recreational boaters windsurfers to be vigilant of helicopters using the river to draw water for fighting the fire. Please keep clear of aircraft in the area!

And this is not a joke.. The fire now extends from across from Lyle to near The Dalles. It is not close to I-84.

Is Rowena closed to windsurfers today?

No. It has been open every day. the helos have been dipping just east of Rowena park and in the bay of Mayer Park, not anywhere folks sail. Though its hard to enjoy windsurfing without feeling guilty in site of all firemen working.

Didn't really feel guilty on Wednesday evening Smile But there was the fear of the fire spreading across the freeway in into the park while out on the water. Not a real fear more a general nervousness. But with the fire up on the hills and the wind, the air was clear in the park and on the water.

Here is an amazing panorama of the fire including windsurfers at Rowena and the helis sucking up water from the river. You can almost zoom in enough to read the sail sizes.

Yesterday (Friday) was kind of surreal windsurfing at Rowena. There were about 15 of us out there (up and down 4.2 conditions) while the fire fighting helicopters flew over our heads a couple of hundred feet above us. This was a constant loop with a helicopter flying over head about every 2 or 3 reaches. I was really wishing I had my GoPro with me. That doesn't happen very often windsurfing.....

I have to say that while it is fascinating watching those helicopters and all it is not fun to be on the receiving end. We live in the hills behind Lyle and had helicopters dropping water on the back side of our property several years ago when a large fire swept through the area. It is awful to watch a fire coming at your home and there is nothing you can do about it. I really feel for those people who are affected by the Rowena fire.

Yes, on Thursday I went to Rowena to windsurf (and assess the fire). Once I got there, I was so sick to my stomach watching the fire progress that I had no desire to windsurf. There were men on the slopes tromping and sweating through poison oak, ticks, etc., trying to do their hazardous jobs. I did not expect to feel that way so strongly.

Good news today! A couple of our fellow Rowena sailors, whose house is across the freeway (& was the poster child on the news), texted this afternoon, "Evac lifted... We get to go home!!!"
This is one weekend I'm glad it's not blowin'
The fire fighters were amazing! Thank you to them all.
