I've sailed Shermine Is for the past 20+ years & have given up at the power lines (my old favorite) since all the windmills have gone up. It seems they've changed the wind flow on the water from this launch site.
I remember the big PG&E fiasco near Benicia with their huge windmill that was too high & above the winds, so it flopped. They eventually tore it down. It really showed how our Delta Breeze is focused close to the ground.
Any calcs been done on the effect of these windmills for winds on the water? |
I have seen the windspeed profiles (and turbulence data) for both Solano (Montezuma Hills across the river, several locations) and for Sherman Island. They were measured by calibrated LIDARS, with the instruments taking data at 10Hz from 10 to 200m. Several locations were measured. The wind speed increases vertically according to an exponential function during the sailing season. This is the reason for the tall masted turbines at Shiloh, the higher the turbine the better the resource. Interestingly, the power curves indicate large scatter in individual turbine output for the same windspeed depending on atmospheric conditions. See:
Atmospheric stability affects wind turbine power collection
