Hi gyus!
I went to a ws course with UCPA 10 years ago, and thought it was amazingly fun.
For some reason I never continued back home (live my a lake), but now I feel like it's time to buy my own board.
However, its hard to compare new and old stuff, not knowing the technical terms and so on.
So I would think that Im interested in the following Starboard boards:
GO 131
Ultrasonic 147
Futura 131
AtomiQ 110
Carve 131
I'm also offered a Fanatic Bee 144 for roughly €100, which is about 10 times cheaper than buying some of the above boards in new condition.
What are your thoughts?
I really want a board to develop on, but it should be useful and fun in this lake where I live.

Hi Evert,
Here are some questions:
How much do you weigh?
Are you active in other sports?
What type of wind speeds are you likely to windsurf in?
What sails will you purchase?
I am sure that you will find some great advice here. |

Sorry, I should have thought of that!
I'm 65-70kg, pretty active and in good shape, i do cycling, orienteering and skiing.
I will mostly use the not so big lake were I live, so I guess the winds are not that great.
Will need a sail that will fit to that.
Maybe I'll take the board with me to the sea some times, so perhaps I need two setups of sails?

All those boards are great, if you have the skill level to use them.
WHAT lake, where? Your weight, your skill level, and what winds, of course. |

USED! No question; vastly cheaper for the same thing. Once you get alot better, you can make a much better decision on how to better allocate your funds so that they go further. _________________ Kansas City |

So you think the Fanatic Bee 144 would be(e) a valid option? |

Evert- All the boards you are proposing are shortboards, which have no daggerboard and which have very low flotation compared to a longboard. I would not buy any of them unless you meet both of these criteria:
1. You have experience sailing a shortboard, which includes going fast (planing) while using the harness and footstraps.
2. Your lake frequently has the strong, steady winds (>15 mph) required for a shortboard to work properly.
My guess is that you're missing at least one of those criteria, and that you would therefore be better of with a longboard, which is a big board that has a daggerboard and about 200 liters volume for flotation. _________________ James' Blog: Windsurfing Equipment Size Calculator

Given your limited experience, I would recommend a relatively modern big long board, like Fanatic Viper 190. Try finding a used one. This board can be used in light and medium wind on flat water, and it's a great learning tool. Older boards can be a lot of fun too, but will offset your learning. The same about sails - avoid old ones.
At some point later, you will try smaller boards at a rental shop, and then decide on your next one.
As for the remaining parts, try to find used ones - you'll save $$$.

Think of something like a Kona One or a good used Equipe/ Fanatic Ultra Cat.
Lots of good sailing on any of those boards, as you get better and have access to more steady and higher winds 15-25knts+ think about adding a 100-120ltr freeride board.
You may want sails like a 6.0 wave se and an Infinity 7.5/8.0. or any other sail of similar quality. |

Whatever type board you get it should be used for a first board. You will destroy a new board. Also you don't really know what type you want or will work so get something cheap in case it doesn't work out which is a real possibility. |
