It is kind of ironic that this online debate was happening while M14 was averaging 30 from the SW.
Airwave's analysis of the conditions up there is spot on. The Sign rocks when the direction is WSW or SW. Otherwise launch from the Access and keep heading up wind for better and better swell.
Sailed this past Saturday Morning in 25knots of pure SW wind and the swell was beautiful. Things fell apart when the wind shifted to W so that it was coming over the hills and resulted in gusty wind and choppy water.
I've sailed up there for 18 years and my recollection is that has always been the case. Perhaps there are some global/regional factors affecting the prevailing direction of the wind, but I am not sure the windmills are making the wind any less crappy when it is coming from the NW. |

Hi Spennie,
So sorry to hear of your disappointment in the delta.
But I also think Airwave hit it right on the money.
I too have been sailing the delta for years and have noticed that the Powerlines and the Sign are not as quite as windy these days. But the Access and Park are still blowing with good swell on an ebb especially if you sail a bit more to the west. As far as the crowds go in the park,
you can easily avoid that by launching from just across from the bathroom just inside the gate of the park or from the launch at the access.
As for the number of windsurfers at Rio Viento or the Sign, well, it's no secret that there just aren't as many people windsurfing these days.
I'm 50 years old and there does not seem to be a whole lotta peeps younger than me out there. There are a few young guns of course but not the majority.
As far as the delta goes-it's still an awesome place to sail/hangout,
friendly people with the Delta Daze attitude alive and well.
I was there Saturday late afternoon totally lit on a 5.5 and 86 liter board for 2-1/2 hours-coulda been on a 5.0 at 5:30 but was too lazy to go back in to re-rig. Quite a few sailors out too.
So, if you really want it-it's all still there. You may have to sail a bit further west than past years, but it is still ON!
Hope to see you up here next year or sooner.
Cheers,
Greg |

Yeah, nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.

there must be windmills everywhere, cuz everybody seems to complain that their spot is not as windy as it used to be of course i'm also probably 35lbs heavier than when I started windsurfing.
that said... powerlines used to be busy launch (my preferred spot), but now it seems nobody sails there, and it often times does not look that windy there. _________________ Kevin Kan

This is video is from 89-90 at the upper powerlines. The launch was a narrow, one at time in and out pass thru the rocks and on weekends was usually a line 3-6 deep waiting to get in/out. Ah the good ol' days! Anybody see any familiar faces? I didn't put music to it so feel free to sing along with whatever you like.

I think I saw the Mod Squad out there?
But seriously, the Delta is still a great place. Coming from Sacramento my spot was Windy Cove. Once they closed that I moved up to the County Park/Access. Ten minute longer drive, not outdoor showers & more crowds, but still great people, great times & a great place to sail.
Spennie, I think you brought & took your SoCal wind with you because the Delta has been going off, non-stop, no mid day lull for a solid week now.

Only saw him there once. He was doing it all day. Obviously a lot better than the rest of us. I had the orange helmet riding my first of three Fanantic Ultra Mambas and my buddy Gary had the green one. _________________ The Time a Person Spends Windsurfing is not Deducted from their Lifespan...
