I guess this falls into the pet peeves bin, but have you noticed that great whites that were supposed to be shrinking in numbers and an endangered species have become about as common as raccoon's now? It seems they are popping up everywhere now; both coasts, Auzzie land etc. |

We get a lot more sightings of the coast of SoCal than we used to. I hadn't even heard of a great white until I saw Jaws in '75. A few weeks back Ledbetter beach in Santa Barbara was closed due to a sighting. I used to surf there all the time and never even thought about a shark. |

Overall, worldwide shark populations are much lower than they were in the mid 20th century, as evidenced both by fisheries catch data and scientific survey data.

Really dramatic declines (70 - 99% loss, depending on the species and the ocean) have occurred from 1950 - 2000, so we're basically windsurfing in an ocean with just a few percent as many sharks in it as there used to be.
The historical data for Great White populations isn't as good as it is for other species of sharks. But some evidence suggests that Great Whites in California decreased from the 1970s to the 1990s due to bycatch in longline and net fisheries for other species, then have recovered somewhat since 2000 due to fisheries restrictions.

Sighting of great whites or sharks in general? There are many different species. |

I would certainly agree that people should not be chopping off shark fins, killing whales or for that matter, killing rhinos, elephants or great apes. Not sure what can really be done though. |

Here is a thought.
Here on the central coast of cal. There has been a large increase in the seal population. So much so that this year the babies are starving and are found weaken in the water and on the beaches. An article in the paper stated that 600 pups have been rescued and are being rehabilitated at great cost to be released back into the food chain. The food chain could not support them. Now we feed them, release them to produce more pups that will starve next year.
Young Great white sharks feed on fish and young weaken seal pups. Now the powers to be, have removed 600 potential meals for the young sharks.
As the apex predator, these sharks a searching for a food source. Us surfers and swimmers in wet suits sure look like a slow weaken seal pup.... |

Don't know if great whites are endangered, but people sure aren't, yet every time one gets "tasted" the media react like we might run out of em sometime soon. The irony is, that EVERY single major problem the world faces today can be traced to one root cause: too many people.
Now before undies begin to be bunched, I have a solution on who should be fed to sharks first for the greater good and to reduce the surplus population: Isobars
An added bonus is that the caustic and bitter taste of Fick-meat will surely surely make every great white think twice about chowing down on humans from then on.
Food for thought.....and sharks. _________________ Kansas City |
