without the kennedy administration and the national seashore, there would be a lot more private inacessable beachfront. i'm quite sure one of the tenets is public use of the seashore for recreation.

Umm yeah, but not at the expense of endangered species... Rolling Eyes

They didn't ban recreation...they banned one specific (annoying) activity after witnessing, documenting and responding to its impact on endangered indigenous wildlife...

Have you no compassion? Laughing Very Happy

Although not an endangered indigenous bird ... I tend to avoid beaches that are crowded with kites. So who knows what the birds think.

All joking aside, it seems like the entire seashore shut down is BS. The federal government fix for any potential problem is a 100 lb sledgehammer swinging at the wrong target.

I saw a few 2 day old plover chics on one of the outer beaches on Saturday. Very cute tiny little things.

I've witnessed all sorts of shore birds freak out when a kite launches overhead or swings over the dunes. Those birds include plovers, turns and the rats of the sky, seagulls. We windsurfers aren't viewed as such a threat, except when we rig next to nesting turns which change from fun birds to observe into dive-bombing fighters! When a kite suddenly appears overhead, those turns simply start squawking and then bug out.

Not a scientific observation, but apparently real in my experience. Such reaction from the birds does make sense, but who knows if the behavior restricts itself to nesting and brooding time.

I have never seen such behavior from birds when flying my kites. They could care less , absolute nonsense!!
Most of the time I have to yell at birds on the water to get out of the way.
Birds thrive in all kinds of environments with much louder and more dangerous things to deal with. I have nesting birds in my yard that my rat terrier loves to harass, on a daily basis. THEY COME BACK EVERY YEAR!!

I'm glad your experience is different than mine.

I also suspect that different birds react to disturbance differently depending not only on the type of bird, the nature of the disturbance but also on the timing of that disturbance -particularly if the birds are nesting for egg development and baby nurturing.

The Audubon Society should really find some people who watch birds and get to the bottom of this Plover thing...

Not endangered. No Real study has been done in regard to kites and the birds.
the wind factory will start chopping them up soon enough .

What does a plover "think" a seagul or osprey or a private jet out of hyannis is?

I also have seen plenty of turns at west Dennis beach, some too close!
Lots of kites, never seen the turns head away from anything.
