|
|
First the bad news.
The little beach area outside the Mayo Beach State Park has been closed.
There are no trespassing signs posted and the area has been roped off.
Now the good news.
Mayo Beach State Park is now open to windsurfers. There is a $40
permit fee and it covers the time period through April 2003 when a
full season path will be available for $75. There is a padlocked gate
to which you will be provided the combination and then you can
windsurf 7 days a week from dawn till dusk.
The park is situated at the mouth of the South River on the South
West bank. Thomas point light is about a mile away and Annapolis, MD
is about five miles away.
There is a nice grassy area for rigging. There are plenty of picnic
tables and good bathroom facilities. The launch area is from a sandy
beach. Depending on the tide situation there are a number of areas
where the water is only chest deep, but out in the river proper you
are out of your depth fairly quickly.
I believe a couple of local wind surfers did a lot of foot work with
park personnel to get this set up and they have done a great job. The
park people are extremely friendly and it all looks like a win-win
situation.
Directions to the Park are as follows.
Take RT 50 (East from the Washington 495 Beltway, or West from
Annapolis) to Rt 424, Davidsonville Rd . Take 424 (East I believe) to
Rt 214 Central Avenue extended. Make a left and head East to Mayo,
about 7 miles. After passing the post-office on your right make a left
after the Citgo gas station on to Triton Beach Rd. Follow brown park
signs to Mayo Beach park.
You will need to fill in an application form and pay for your permit
(checks are OK). The park official says the form is on the web but I
couldnt locate it.
See you out there! |

Now make the site better by voting for a wind sensor here -- vote at http://www.iwindsurf.com/siteVote.iws
(They might not have it listed yet, so do a write-in vote at the bottom of the page.) |

(original post was from 12 years ago, but figure I might just as well keep this question with the original post) So, is the best wind meter for Mayo the Thomas Point buoy sensor? Any advice for adjusting that reading to what one might see at the launch? Thanks. |

Best meter for Mayo? Depends on how you define "best".
Thomas Point is the BEST measure for the true bay conditions because it is essentially in the middle of the bay, with minimal shore effect.
So the good news is that it gives you the most accurate wind readings for bay conditions without shore obstructions, etc. The bad news is that you won't see the local shore effects (e.g., thermals) as much -- there have been plenty of times I've been sailing (on a sailboat) in the nearby West River where the thermals kept it breezy in the river, whereas the bay was almost glass.
I basically use the sensors as a guide and hope for the best when I head out. |
