|
|
Hi,
I am jumping back into windsurfing after a long hiatus and need some help figuring out gear. I weigh about 155lbs. I am decent on a long board but am a little rusty with respect to jibes and tacks. Any board/rig recommendations for someone without a lot planning experience are appreciated. I would like something that can go upwind relatively well and can go fairly fast downwind. My house does not have a lot of storage so shorter is better.
A formula board sounds really interesting. However, I am not good enough to sail with 9m^2+ sail. Can a formula board be used with a 6 or 7m^2? Is this a bad idea?
The Starboard Rio also looks like a possibility. For my weight what size is recommended (180 or 206)? Is there any hope of planning upwind on this board?
Thanks |

Formula board's work great with a 6.5 sized sail, or even a long boom 5.5. I've been saying it on the forums since 2003.
Would need gusts of 21mph to keep planing, using a 62cm fin. No lows under 12, of course.
Last year's final CalCup at Berkeley, the winner used a 7.9 to beat everyone using 10's to 11's in winds of 11-22mph. He opened a lot of eyes. |

And of course, where do you sail? How often can you go?
We need to know the wind conditions you find most often.
Living in the SanFrancisco area, and able to sail most afternoons, you would do well with a 100 liter board, 6 meter, 5.3, and 4.5 sail to sail 150+ days a year in planing conditions. |

I sail in the DC area, so mainly Chesapeake near Annapolis. So, winds will not be anywhere near as strong as SF (10 knots is fairly normal). You mentioned a 100liter. I have done some rentals to refresh my skills and I am too shaky to use 100 at the moment. At 167, a formula board seemed like it would provide some stability while I rebuild the skill set.
Thanks for the help |

Look at the new wide free move boards. They are great for intermediates. Sail bigger than posted size. Get going very early and are stable enough to get when dies. If you never plan on improving your skills enough to get in the straps and harness, then a large wind sup would be better for sub planning sailing |

The intended use of a Formula board is experts racing mostly upwind and downwind in light wind with very large sails.
The problem using one on a beam reach with 6 or 7M sails is the condition of the water may be too rough for a board that wide, you could be in for a wild ride.
Or maybe not, it depends how rough the water is. |

Thank you all for the help out with this. For a wide freemove board, what is the consensus on a dagger board? It seems like it would help upwind. However there is a drag penalty. How would a daggerless do upwind in light air (say 10 knots)? |

ten knots is NOT a lotta wind
if it is not steady, but ranging from 5 to 15 - even worse
take a look at this discussion :

in light winds i prefer long and narrow gliders = longboards |
