Sailed at the boat ramp from 2:30 - 4:00. The wind was 4.2 with a nice tight range but the 300+ flow is still killing the swell. It was mostly chop suey with an occasional roller coming through but overall not what you would expect. Looks like it picked up to 30+ after I left so maybe it got better.

I drove down from Spokane and passed by The Wall about 2:30 and noticed the wind was steady, however the psycho chop and extremely strong swell was the deal breaker. I opted to continue along to The Hatchery where the wind was much more up & down but the swell was nice.
Sailing a 4.7 fully powered just east of the Hatch launch when a giant sturgeon emerged right in front of me....... that fish was about as long as my board (8' 2") and he was about to jump onto my board, probably there to wish me a happy BD?

Checked the Wall, Maryhill, and Avery numerous times all weekend. Seemed like they never blew in the AM and blew north every afternoon by the time there was some wind. Don't know about yesterday afternoon, as I'd given up by noon and went to Dougs, which was excellent for an hour, then good if a little psycho til we left at 6pm.
It is discouraging to sit at the easterly sites patiently til 3pm, only to have it turn north and only be blowing for the last 100 feet of river on the Oregon side. Is there a certain forecast that screws it up out there?
Also, it seemed like the east blew really late in the day. Maybe on an NPH forecast I just need to hang out in HR and go to the Hatch in the morning.

I went out to the Wall on Tuesday, June 10. It was reporting 34 average (almost what Big Tuesday was...). When I got there it had droppd to 29 average, so still very windy. I was appalled at the water conditions. It was tiny. There were a few 2' swells but mostly nothing. The water was all textured and dark indicating wind but all other indicators didn't show. I'd have guessed it was blowing 17 or so based on how flat and unswelled it was. Even the white caps were barely a foot tall.
I would have to sail on a 16" board with a 2' mast for it to be comparable to last week Gorge Giganticus Columbianum.

What was the water level there?
My theory on why late spring high flow kills the swell is that the water level is too high. The current normally causes standing waves when it flows over bottom contours like boulders. The wind then pumps up the standing wave to give the conditions we all like. But if the water is too deep there is no surface standing wave for the wind to pump up. Anyway, that is my theory. Not sure if it is right. But it would also explain why some places are flat no matter how strong the wind is - not enough bottom variations to produce a standing wave.

Can I get a report and preferably some pics from Arlington on 6/12? It was averaging in the 40s for a while, and even gusted 50. That had to have made for some smoothies. Please tell me someone filmed some windsurf pornography from the safety of their car before hitting the water.

Sailed Arlington on 6/12 and sailed the wall on 6/13. Drum role please..... The swell was better at the wall on 6/13. It was close but the wall was a little bigger little steeper and a little smoother. My copilot for both days agreed.

I saw Grant shooting at Arlington on Thursday, so his photos should be uploading soon.

The swell was nice, but nothing close to what we saw at the Hatch on Fat Tuesday.
I stopped at The Wall on the way home to check the swell, and it looked pretty good. These guys had it all to themselves on Thursday evening.
The outflow at the John Day Dam was back under 300,000 CFS so sailing at Rufus and The Wall should be reasonable again.

I checked out Maryhill this afternoon. It was around 30 on the sensor and "fairly consistent" but that wasn't what I was seeing on the water. Very gusty and the swell was just starting to show up, but not really that great. Flow out of the dam was about 263k cfs.
