We now have a couple of threads going on sails so let's revive one on three-batten surf sails.

Check out the performance of the entire rig on this epic JP hit.

I switched to three battens (Hot KS3) last fall. My own 2-cents is that they are unreal.

Before trying one I was pretty skeptical. Realized it was a game changer during the first session. Hard to switch back to four - let alone even contemplate five.

List everything you think would be "wrong" with a three-batten sail. Now imagine your dismay to find out everything you thought was wrong actually turned out to be better!

If you are a surf sailor you should give one a try. You will be seeing many more of them soon.

Cheers,

-J

I too was skeptical until I tried a KS3. The 4.9m KS3 has replaced my 5.3m and 4.7m sails. For me, when it’s rigged to specs, I get 5.3m grunt from that sail. In strong wind when others my size are using 4.5m I add 2 or even 3cm of outhaul and the sail is so well behaved I don’t have to rig smaller until it’s 4.2m wind. So happy with that sail. Now I want to replace my small sails (4.2m and 3.7m) The only bummer is that they each require a different mast

Curious to hear from others who are using three batten offerings from different sail makers…

Mike
