We rent houses.
Sec. 8 is a welfare program for Families With Dependent children. We accept them as well. Since our rentals are more upscale we look at hundreds of applications from welfare moms, at least a couple thousand by now after 30years.
We have rented to at least a hundred welfare families.
Much that I see about these people on Fox or here is nonsense. Every one of the applicants had a job, often two.
Every single one pays taxes, though not all pay income tax.
Since Clinton and the Dems changed the law, every able bodied person who gets cash payments must be employed.
GOP governors asked for permission to make exceptions to that because so much of their base is poor uneducated people in the South and there is a depression going on.

These folks don't seem to care which rich man in an expensive suit wins the election. They are looking for warm clothes to send the kids to school and something for dinner besides Mac and cheese.

5. Be able to identify Pelosi, Boehner, Reid, Biden, Romney, etc. or their timely future counterparts.
6. Be able to construct one solid and accurate sentence, maybe even a paragraph, about most of the top 10 current important issues.
7. From a list of 10 or 20 widely discussed one-liner claims, be able to properly distinguish facts from BS talking points with a passing grade.

I recently saw a survey in which questions like
Who is Angela Merkel and which party controls the House of Reps?
Those who watch PBS did the best on this test.
Those who watch mainstream news came in second.
Those who watch no news at all came third.
Those who watch Fox came in last.
The GOP won't be including civics tests on any voter requirement soon.

That is usual in Europe. Some countries require you to vote.

Most require you to take a civics exam to run for office. This would leave folks like Michelle Bachman and Cruz out of politics.

I'm for compulsory suffrage except for the dumbshits. And we all know who THEY are.

No... they'd pass the test. Unfortunately, nothing on the test can detect outright dissemblers.

They intentionally lie.

The danger of having the rich have more say in elections is that they would start to skew the system in their favor to make themselves richer. Oh wait, they are already doing that through their campaign contributions and PAC's !

I would however be open to the idea of minimum qualifications to vote. For example:
1) read and write English - not to be xenophobic but a common language is what binds us together
2) graduate from high school - a certain minimum level of education
3) at least 21 years old - some experience in life helps
4) actually having paid taxes - more controversial but should people that don't contribute have a say in how the money is spent?

I like it, and this goes hand in hand with these people who shouldn't be able to vote as well.

Over a quarter of Americans do not know the Earth circles the Sun, according to a new survey.

There was a Pew survey that showed that 16% of Americans did not know who the President was.
When my wife took the civics test for US citizenship a couple years ago, we passed it around. Not one person we know even came close to passing it.

This could give some folks a doubt about everyone voting. It hasn't produced a good gov. in America in a long time.
There is little hope on the horizon.
US voters have put back the same losers in Congress without fail despite an approval rate under 15% for decades.
We reelect more than 80% of Congressmen who run.

Unfortunately, not surprising. A short story......

My ex brother-in-law began teaching US History in high school in 1968 in Brownsville TX. He quickly discovered that the interest level regarding early US history was essentially non existent. Since many of his students had relatives that had been drafted into the Vietnam war, he decided to teach history backward, starting with the war. It worked, and kept the attention level of his students high and helped them understand how they got to where they were.

History is fascinating, but few teachers can make it interesting.
