I came across a very interesting historical artifact yesterday--the cover letter for Stanley Mosk's 1961 report on the John Birch Society. Here's a context for it:

http://books.google.com/books/about/Report_on_the_John_Birch_Society.html?id=4LTCPAAACAAJ

Mosk, in a very funny cover letter, opined that the John Birch Society was made up of wealthy business men, "retired military officers, and little old ladies in tennis shoes." He went on to note their obsessive fear of communism (now of Islam) Of course the John Birch Society was founded by Robert Welch, and was part of the fervor that empowered McCarthy. Other notable founders include the patriarch of the Koch dynasty--Fred Koch. Some scary stuff out there. They never went away, and they are the force, and money behind at least some of the Tea Party

.
And there's this:

"Political opinions are considered choices, and in Western democracies the right to choose one’s opinions — freedom of conscience — is considered sacrosanct.

But recent studies suggest that our brains and genes may be a major determining factor in the views we hold.

A study at University College London in the UK has found that conservatives’ brains have larger amygdalas than the brains of liberals. Amygdalas are responsible for fear and other “primitive” emotions. At the same time, conservatives’ brains were also found to have a smaller anterior cingulate — the part of the brain responsible for courage and optimism.

If the study is confirmed, it could give us the first medical explanation for why conservatives tend to be more receptive to threats of terrorism, for example, than liberals. And it may help to explain why conservatives like to plan based on the worst-case scenario, while liberals tend towards rosier outlooks.

_______

And this:

"Schreiber’s conclusions are based on brain scans of 82 people, whose party affiliations were disclosed, as they played a simple gambling game. The results showed that Republicans and Democrats did not differ in the risks they took during the game, but there were striking differences in the participants' brain activity during the risk-taking task.

Democrats showed significantly greater activity in the left insula, a region associated with empathy, and social and self-awareness. Meanwhile Republicans showed significantly greater activity in the right amygdala, a region involved in the body's fight-or-flight system. These results suggest that liberals and conservatives engage different cognitive processes when they think about risk.

It may also explain why all the folks in the following video are likely liberals.

Good thing the ACA will be there to take care of these idiots.

That's a GREAT video! Thanks for sharing.

It proves that the fundamental principles of evolution work. Those idiots are on schedule to win the Darwin Award and thus not propagate their peculiar subspecies of homo erectus.

But your logic of why those morons are likely liberals is specious.

No surprise there.

It's also a good thing that few of them will procreate.

Sometimes door #3 is preferable to doors #1 and #2.

I could counter that those were Tea Party goofballs, falling flat on their faces... but I won't.

Still, it's a funny video.
