I used to be a big time die hard sailing while it was snowing out, but now anything that requires neoprene glove is not worth it. Sailing off the hook on frontside conditions just leads to instant fatigue with glove. 8'C seems to be my mark for requiring gloves.
Surfing is not an option here but it's good to hear you're still getting out there enjoying the waves. What temperature is the water?

Our patch on the NE coast of the N Sea is usually at about 5 degrees centigrade in January. The water surface temps can get much colder in severe spells (Surf comp in 1979 with sea ice in a local harbour!)

I still windsurf in the cold but have always worn full 4mm neoprene gloves throughout. The grip secret is to make sure they are a snug fit with no movement between skin and neoprene, especially essential with the palms which have to grip the boom. Any slip there really makes life difficult. By the end of winter I'm so used to using them that it barely registers, save for spells out of the harness.

But hey, keep up the enthusiasm RR. It makes for much more pleasure when loads of others (our board surfers are permanently stoked) are also enthusiastic, and we don't have to be the ones driving things, in our enthusiasm to get out there! I still get that 'surge' on first spotting the sea from the car, and scatter old ladies from crossings in that rush to get there before it goes! Laughing

Going back to TV, the following article highlights Roger Ailes and his management of Fox News.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/27/opinion/frum-fox-news-anxiety/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

Perhaps the following best describes the Fox News audience.

"Viewers don't want to be informed. Viewers want to feel informed."

"Gabriel Sherman tells eyebrow-raising stories about Roger Ailes. Always a man who kept enemies' lists, Ailes has -- in Sherman's account -- succumbed to increasing apprehension as he has gained increasing power. His office is secured with a double set of locked and coded doors. His country home features a panic room. Former employees report being followed and suspect their e-mail has been read. The anxiety that permeates Fox News' broadcasts emanates authentically from the man at the top. Yet it speaks also to something pervasive in Fox's audience too.

Like talk radio before it, but even more intensely, Fox offered information programmed not as a stream of randomly connected facts, but as a means of self-definition and a refuge from a hostile external reality. Fox is a news medium that functions as a social medium."

Like some of our contributors from the right, Fox News viewers want "breaking news" that can't be had from the "mainstream media".

From the above link:

" Fox is the most watched cable news network and yet, some surveys suggest that people who watch Fox know less about current events than people who watch no news."

Not surprising.

News flash:

Today Justin Beiber busted for drag racing going 55-60 mph! This is news?

And yet CNN is getting blown out of the water by FNC, which is probably why you see opinions like the one above.

Now for some facts~

Fox News Dominates Cable Ratings for State of the Union Address

January 29, 2014 | 11:41AM PT
It beats the combined viewership of MSNBC, CNN

Rick Kissell
@ratesrick

Fox News flexed its muscles as the most popular cable news outlet Tuesday night, as its coverage of the State of the Union address out-drew the combined tune-in of rivals CNN and MSNBC. It was also the only one to be up vs. last year’s speech.

According to Nielsen estimates for roughly 9:14-10:20 p.m. ET, Fox News Channel averaged 4,718,853 viewers — more than double MSNBC (2,292,169) and CNN (2,081,431). FNC held a sizable advantage in the key news demo of adults 25-54 as well (1,197,554), with CNN ranking second by this measure (762,450) and MSNBC third (752,054).

From 9 to 11 p.m., FNC, whose coverage was anchored by Bret Baier, averaged 4.51 million viewers, followed by 2.17 million for MSNBC and 1.88 million for CNN.

It was a much tighter race a year ago, with Fox News only narrowly leading CNN in total viewers and finishing third in adults 25-54. (CNN’s performance a year ago may have been boosted by its breaking news coverage reporting on the manhunt of Christopher Dorner in the California mountains before and after the President’s speech.)

Compared to the 2013 State of the Union address, held in February, Fox News was up 28% in total viewers (from 3.68 million) and 25% in adults 25-54 (from 956,000), while CNN was down more than 40% in both categories and MSNBC was off by more than 20 in both.

This was CNN’s least-watched SOTU since 2005 in both total viewers and the 25-54 demo, and it was MSNBC’s lowest since 2008.

Nielsen was expected to announce a cume viewership total later Wednesday. Last year, it estimated that an average audience of 33.5 million watched the SOTU on 16 broadcast and cable networks — the smallest audience for the event since 2000.

Hey NW...Roger certainly has you by the short and curlys....hows that doing for the party?
BTW- Prime Time advertisers pay twice the rate for CNN, than FNC. why is that? I'll answer, $$$$, and age. CNN viewers are richer and younger. NBCU just reported record earnings...NBC, MSNBC, CNBC are cash flow machines.....much higher margins than FNC. 5,000,000 old rural conservatives is less valuable than 2,000,000 urban professionals in the ad world.

You're missing the point, NitWit. You're confusing quantity with quality. You believe that because more people watch Fox it must be better.

There are FAR more people lacking a high school degree than people with PhDs. By your logic, that would make lack of education education better than advanced education because more people lack a high school education.

Just because more people watch Fox does not not mean it's better -- it simply means more people are willing to let Ailes do their thinking for them and feed them feces.

And this explains why you say the things you say -- courtesy of Roger Ailes.
