Puerto Rico?
Spent a month there, 4th winter. West/NW coast has the most wind, and the strongest waves.
SE coast has more days of wind, but softer waves and onshore winds.
I keep a 100 liter board there, and 5.5 sail.

I went to Arenal many years back. The comparison to Rowena seems about right. Never went back; I thought it was not sunny enough and a little too choppy to warrant traveling that far for a winter get-away.

Is the Bar Equus still around there? It is a pretty cool place. My wife and I broke in the millennium new year in that bar. It consists of several dance areas and places to hang out, all built into the jungle with great artistry using river rock. It was a wild scene, and I am not really a bar person.

indeed, equus is still there. and i bet the menu is exactly the same! fun place, though. and thank god for cold beer at the end of the day.

as for the "bathtub" effect, i don't think that's quite accurate. the lee end of the lake is an enormous area of grasses and reeds. there's definitely no bouceback off the lee end of the lake.

that said, it's definitely more bump and jump and tight. there is a definite pattern to the wave that's consistent and regular. but, it's a tight pattern and, as somebody here said, it definitely requires some getting used to.

Scotty has described that to me as the best spot (at Arenal) for swell but the worst place to get caught in a dying wind, as there's just no way to go ashore and walk back.
