What size fin should I get?

It's for my F2 Axxis 272 from the mid 90s.

I'll probably be using sales sizes from 4.5 - 5.8 or so and I weigh 140 lbs.

I am looking for a bump n jump or slalom fin.

I would appreciate any suggestions as I totally forgot all this stuff!!

Thx

A 28 cm True Ames Convert fin would seem to be just the ticket.....

They have been making these fins forever, and they work well. Most shops will carry these.

That is a big sail range for one fin. What works with the 5.8 will probably tail walk with the 4.5 & what works with the 4.5 will likely spin out with the 5.8 sail.

I'll second the Convert but you will probably want 2 of them for a sail spread 4.5-5.8

Also like the True Ames Convert.

I use a 32 cm. for 5.5- 6.5, and a 28 cm. for 4.2 -5.3. I've used the 32 with a 7.5, but it's a bit small.

As coachg said get two.

size wise at your weight, a 30 or 28cm should be close for ONE fin.
I would look at the area along with the length, this will vary on the shape

Black Project, Maui Fin Co........and any number of others would work

From a economic standpoint the purchase of a $100 + fin for this board would IMO be unreasonable, I say look for something used and you should be able to find 2 fins for 100 bucks.

OTOH you could use the $$ to upgrade the board to a 2000..something.

Westender; I personally use Lightning Fins;

http://www.recreationalcomposites.com/

They are the best fins that I have ever tried for recreational sailing and can be repaired back to new at the factory for a nominal cost. I have used them exclusively for 25 years after I purchased one at Big Winds in their Store Front over by Promotion.

They do cost tho...and thus I thought that the Convert would be a more reasonable choice for the board that Felixbird owned.

I would let you try one of my Lightnings tho....

I sail the 272 and is my favorite board (1998 yellow with red graphics on each side). I sail in the SF Bay. One fin is realistic, based on skill level.

My weight is close to you at 155. I use the Axxis from 4.2 to 5.6 and use the Convert 28 on the 4.8 & 4.2 That fin is ideal for the 4.8, 18 - 23 knots. Good and controlled for the 4.2. The 5.6 is fine, and is better matched with a 30, no bigger. I use the single back strap.

My sails are Huckers (at medium downhaul, they deliver more power than my wave sails) A 4.2 = 4.5, 4.8 = 5.3, 5.6 = 6.0.

Hope that helps.

I also use that 28 Convert in all my PBox boards.
It works great for me, at 160 lbs., from 5-7 meters, for go fast sailing and solid jibes, with a few jumps each run. It often get's matched up against full on slalom boards and Tectonics or RecComp fins, and does very well.
For anything windier than 4.7 conditions, I'd consider one of my 8.25 wave fins.
Converts are very thick for their chord, so have more lift than it's length would indicate. I normally use 34 Tectonics fins on my slalom boards.
