The Bonner Bridge is closed due to safety concerns. Back to emergency ferry service for access to Hatteras Island. Oh joy, and we have a forecast of warm windy weather on tap for the weekend!

Damn, 3 MONTHS?

Can't they just blow a few barges of sand on it?

This link is kinda cool.

Re: the bridge- repairs are already scheduled/in process. Initial estimates are for the closure to last just a few weeks, up to 3 months max for worst case scenario. I'm sure more details will emerge in short time.

In the meantime, ferries are running from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe, which adds about 2-3 (relaxing boat ride) hours to the normal drive times. Not the end of the world. The island is OPEN to the public, it just takes a little bit longer to get here. And it's just a little bit more obvious than normal that YES, this is an Island...

Usually you get that relaxing feeling as soon as you get over the bridge- that "time doesn't matter, life is good" type sensation. The ferry is exactly the same- you're on island time as soon as you get on that boat. Bring a book, and some snacks, and enjoy the ride. My 2 cents.

I have a general rule to avoid all things political in a public forum, so I will simply say that the folks directly involved with our current bridge situation are listed below, as is a brief history.

NC DOT was previously approved to begin construction of a replacement bridge. It was fully permitted, already bid upon, and contracts were already awarded. This project has been studied and reported on for about 20 years.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is suing NC DOT to stop construction of the approved bridge.

This is their reason for suing NC DOT:

The SELC is representing the Defenders of Wildlife and the National Wildlife Refuge Association:

Diplomatically phrased Andy! But hey, look on the bright side. With all these moves by outside groups to jeopardize the safety and livelihood of Hatteras Island residents, Hatteras islanders will soon become an endangered species and the SELC will jump at the chance to represent you!

I did.

I could overreact to this, but things are not becoming user friendly,
instead the humans are being blocked

What are they doing ?

Looks like more leverage for a storm to pull the whole bulkhead down. When man vs. nature...nature always wins.

Does this go around the whole parking lot or just where the parking lot bulkhead overhangs the beach on the southern portion? Quess people are not sitting on the bulkhead anymore.
