It seems a cutoff low is parked 1000 miles North of the islands. This has greatly diminished wind quality for the last few (2-6) months by blocking and/or veering the trades to be SE. Winds even in the summer seemed atypical this year. Has anybody else noticed this as well? Is this normal for Maui? It seems 10 years ago the North Shore was always on for weeks and months without missing a single day. |

I just got back from Maui. It was my worst ever trip to Maui - I was able to sail only 5 days out 3 weeks. Sucks! _________________ Andrew

Bull, it's not rockin if your not there!
I agree with the OP. Same on the west coast. Not much high pressure in season, and no powerful lows pushing fronts through now. It has been weak throughout the Pacific.
It is my observation that when the wind goes ESE Hookipa can be sailable. |

The lack of wind is killing me. Is this a long term weather cycle or a short term blip? |

I used to regularly use my 3.5 in the early 90's. I haven't been on anything smaller than a 5.0 for 5 years. Change is inevitable. |

From a scientific perspective, there is significant suggestion that we will be shifting from a cool [negative] to a warm [positive] phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Positive PDO increases wind stress in the Northern Pacific. Keep up hope and give it a few years. A simple graphic may be found at:

See Bromirski et al 2011 for a more robust discussion of wind stress curl changes and consequences for eastern Pacific.
