May be that's because you increased your skills level? I used to sail a lot with 7.0 but got bored one day... Of course it's good to go out with 7.0 when there is little wind for a long time, but does it worth having such a rig (with the known prices for boards and sails)?
But, as I said, I think that dudes in LA are lucky, cause if there is little wind you can always just grab a surf board a ride some nice waves while waiting for a real wind)) |
I had to move away from OC to SD. Cabrillo beach is the last good consistent wind on the coast till you get down to Baja. Back in the day I was 160 lbs, sailed a 5.3 NP Race and a 9.0 salom. During the summer (May till Septemberish) I sailed 2-3 times during the week after 5 pm and both days on the weekend (If I could get away from my wife). The last few years before I moved I sailed a 6.3 HOT Race and a 8-9 Salom board. The wind is light near the beach, then out a 100 yrds it picks up then dies a bit out about 1/4 mile out. So if you rig small stay in the windier section. If over powered stay out further past the bouy and more upwind toward the Fermin lighthouse, there was a kelp bed there that really smoothed out the water like a snow cat. Just dont blow you jibe cause everyone on the bluff will be watching you.
During the summer you dont need a wet suit.
Driving all the way up to SF just to windsurf is a waste of time. It'll take you half a day. Just go surf or do something else.
SF has great winds and all but during the summer I'd rather drive up to Rio Vista/sherman island on a Friday after work, set up camp, wake up and sail a 5.0 at sunrise stop when you get hungry then go back out again till sunset. Crash and do it again on Sunday till noon then head back south. Never been skunked. Never had to rig anything larger than a 5.0.
If the wind forcast is right this weekend it'll be epic at Cabrillo 30+ with 5 ft swells.
God do I miss windsurfing. All I need to do is lose 20 lbs, find an extra $3K for some new gear and retire so I can make the drive up.... |
