Hopefully you feel you have received it (in short: get a 6.0-6.5 sail made in the last five years, camless.) What's happening now is known as a "thread hijack".

Lee, I have no doubt you rip on your 1993 sail. My question is how do you keep a sail for 20 years?

Dammit, Puffin, Lee is offering some valid advice and backing it up. Some of those old sails had great bottom end power for early planing, and they're dirt cheap. Their upper wind range sucked compared to modern sails, but they're an inexpensive way to get back into the nice, comfortable sailing the OP asked for, and he says he's not expecting the big gusts many old non-race sails didn't deal with well. That's not hijacking; it's answering the man's question with alternative solutions besides spending a ton of money on modern gear. Enough with belittling people who don't subscribe to your my-way-or-the-highway decrees.

I have a 12-yo sail that is so outstanding that my new 2013 quiver includes a direct copy of it matching the quiver so I'll never be without one. They're plastic; I'm guessing that 12-yo sail will still sail like new long after I'm 6 feet under. It doesn't get much UV in its bag in my garage.

Not directly related to the sail size stuff but I remember you writing about you still learning harness. This harness line position tip from Matt Pritchard really helped me set mine up when I was learning.

without spending 'a ton' of money

I have no affiliation with Windance nor NP nor Loft

probably lots of others in the buy and sell section

the sail itself is part of the problem , and solution.

You're right...I should have been more clear. I should have said that it was you, Iso, who is hijacking the thread. By no means was I suggesting that Lee was the hijacker. Iso, if you go back and carefully study my comment and question to Lee, you'll see that I express no doubt about his claim, and ask about his ability to keep a sail for two decades:

"Lee, I have no doubt you rip on your 1993 sail. My question is how do you keep a sail for 20 years?"

I would dearly like to know. I have things to learn, and I've never been able to keep a sail usable for half that long (Lee if you're reading, I really truly would love insight. My favorite sails rarely get past five seasons...the monofilm (or whatever the "clear part" is made of) always cracks and tears.) Iso, I have it on good authority that Lee is an excellent windsurfer, certainly way better than I am. As opposed to the many discussions is so many threads that beg for any evidence to support your claims.

But back to the thread hijack: I will avail myself of Mo's eloquent art:

Hello, I would love some advice on choosing a sail size. I am 135 lbs and sail in mostly in 8 to 16 knot winds. My sail is a 5.5. I am returning to windsurfing after being away from it for some years. I am currently learning to use a harness but havent gotten it completely down yet and feeling really overpowered even with the 5.5. I have a 125 L board. I'm not looking to win any races or impress anyone. Just nice comfortable sailing. The sail sizes I am looking at are 3.2 3.7 4.2 and 4.5. Does anyone have a recommendation on which would be best without going too small? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, cheers, Len

Len, at your weight and in 8-16 kts of wind I doubt that your feeling overpowered because of the sail size. I would not rush out and buy a newer sail just yet. Sounds to me like your rig is not balanced.

I would suggest, working on getting used to using the harness, and making sure you have your sail rigged properly, with the boom at the correct height, and harness lines in the correct position and length, as KevinDo suggested. That link kevin posted is great! A properly balanced rig turns a struggle into somethin nearly effortless!

Once you have got your rig set up properly, you should be able to sail in the footstraps hooked in to the harness and be able to let go of the booms for short period of time.

I agree with Zirtaeb, isobars and others who were only trying to point out that there is plenty of old gear out there in good shape that works well and can be had for a song! There is also wothless junk for sale that belongs in the trash.

One other thing, are you rigging this sail on the correct mast? If you have it on an incompatible mast it won't work very well.
