Of the hundreds of sails we tested throughout the 1990s, the AWOLs ranked near rock bottom in wind range and stability. Surely you can find something better, and if equally old, darned near free.

I'd go with Peconic's advice, a 6.5 would fit fine in that range of wind that you got.

The only advice I'd give is...don't fall for the good deal! When I was starting off, I'd literally get anything I could find ooff of craigslist. That could include pre 2000 sails ... probably should've just got a more modern sail to start off with lol.

Before considering buying any new sails, I think that you need to review and consider why you seem to be overpowered on a 5.5 sail in 8-16knts of wind. Even at 135lbs, I don't think that you would be struggling at all.

First off, you might post a few photos of your rigged sail to confirm that it's rigged properly. While it is an older sail, it should still work reasonably well if it's rigged correctly.

Next, I'm wondering whether you're standing too close to the mast while sailing. I would work on moving back on the board to at least get your foot in the front footstrap. That would allow you to get further back on the boom and more readily rake the sail back a bit to counter the sail's power. Of course, you need to be realistic about the wind speed. I would think that you need at least 12-13knts of consistent wind to consider planing and moving into the straps.

Again, I wouldn't invest more money in equipment before you can overcome the current hurdles you're facing. Lastly, I would look for some feedback from others at your sailing site. Don't be afraid to ask for some advice and assistance. Most sailors would be happy to help out someone getting into the sport.

You can knock old sails all you want, but I guarantee you, I will smoke your butt in winds of 14-22 with my 1993 GaastraMX-5. On freeride boards, slalom boards, or whatever.

AWOL sails, circa 1993...
Excellent sails, high tensioned, so most of you didn't tune it correctly, deep draft below the booms, very twisted above.
Due to high rig tension, they seldom lasted more than 85 sailing days without seam problems or fraying at the reinforcements.
If you examined the twist ratios, you will find it's as modern as anything produced in the past 5 years, for 2 cam freeride sailing.

With most sails we tested -- including the HOTs -- the guys who designed them personally coached our tuning or sent team riders to do it. Little was left to printed instructions or the pros on our test team, and with most sails we had the designers on speed dial, so to speak. We often called designers from the beach when tuning questions arose.

You're playing with fool's gold.
With my old sails, I sail with the fastest guys here in SanFrancisco bay, and those guys are using newer than 2 year old equipement.
Don't be so smitten by the newest stuff.
I've sailed side by side with most of the racers, including some National Slalom Champs, past and present.
Accepting a challenge over the interent sounds like you're being brave.
In reality, you just don't even now how to jibe.
