This sounds like a practical joke but it's true: Don't let go of the boom when you get pulled over the front and you won't wreck your board. 2 reasons this works are 1. Your boom will be moving much more slowly, since it has to drag you along with it, so it's more like pushing the nose under rather than smacking it with a hammer. 2. You can usually steer the boom away from the nose if you're paying attention.

Does anyone know if any shops in Santa Cruz rent SUP boards that have a windsurf rig attachment point?

Selling my one-year-old Kona One, see ads under "Freeride Boards".

There are only two shops that I know of.
Coverwater has a more extensive collection you could
give them a call but I wouldn't count on finding one with
track or attachment but you could ask.
The other shop is down by the harbor they also do kayaks
and have much more limted selection.
You might find some at boardsports or http://www.101surfsports.com/
however both are in San Mateo.
What are you trying to accomplish.

Great advice from you all. Many thanks. I use that Dakine boom pad. Seems to thin to really do much. Just going to hold onto the boom I suppose and become my board's human sacrifice. Still gonna try like hell not to wipe out period. Haven't crashed while wave riding yet but it' only a matter of time until I due. Thanks in advance for any future advice regarding this mind boggling sport I have been bitten by big time.

If you look closely at my picture first I have a Neil Pryde T-boom nose pad with the Dakine pad over the top.
The Pryde pad has superior padding and coverage but inferior sized velcro, it always falls off but the Dakine pad has superior velcro so it goes over it and holds both on the boom nose.
The ION pad keeps the lower mast area from damaging the area just off the nose to the sides.
SUP's just don't seem to be made as durable as a dedicated windsurfing board.
With just the Dakine nose pad if the catapult sends the rig off to the side a bit the part of the boom clamp just below the pad is exposed and if the nose clears the side of the board this part just below the nose can and will impact and destroy the side of the board. Crying or Very sad
