Hi Gang,

Yesterday did you see Ben's comments about the pressure gradient to the Great Basin being off the charts? The first video below shows that comment was not just rhetoric.

But strangely there were powerful gusty winds inside the Bay but weaker winds on the coast.

Why? The brunt of North Pacific High's surface NW winds really never reached the coast. While the NW winds just aloft were pulled strongly by a deep low pressure in the Great Basin.

Think of the NPH's surface winds as being steady while the winds aloft interact with hilltops creating turbulence which sometimes descends to the surface jazzing up the wind but adding a up and down factor. If the North Pacific High's surface NW wind had full reached the coast most sites would have see mid 30 knot winds.

The first video below shows a deep low pressure in the Great Basin these winds aloft. Note the powerful wind rushing over California to the Basin.

The second video from this morning shows that this Great Basin low has marched eastward so the wind going over the Bay Area to the Great Basin is barely visible. So today the Bay Area wind, while still useful, will not be as strong.

For details see this video blog: http://blog.weatherflow.com

Look again at the first video. This pattern should be repeated this coming Friday or Saturday. Except this time the low pressure will be in the southern Great Basin favoring Southern California winds.
