Baltimore Area Boardsailing Assoc (BABA) has a few spaces left for our fall trip to Hatteras.
Where: Avon, NC. On the Island Creek windsurfing development (right behind Ocean Air). BABA has locked in reservations on these primo windsurfing houses for many years - they're right on Pamlico Sound with large grassy frontage - THE IDEAL place to learn and improve your windsurfing. The water is warm, and the sound is quite shallow for a long, long, long way out. So when you fall off your board (yes, everyone falls), you’re not in deep water.
When: Oct 5-12 (Sat – Sat) Houses open at around 4pm on Oct 5th, and we must be OUT of the houses by 10am on the 12th.
How: Most people drive, but one can fly down to Norfolk and rent a car as an option.
Who: You’ll be with a great group of fellow windsurfers. BABA is the east coast’s largest windsurfing club, and we know how to have a good time! This year, we’ve rented 6 houses…enough to accommodate about 40 windsurfers, spouses, significant others (no pets), and offspring. House assignments are made by the trip coordinator and sent about 10 days before trip time. Food and meals are TBD for each house separately; some houses arrange to eat all meals together – in others, people enjoy dining out locally or preparing their own meals.
What to bring: Most people bring their own equipment, but certainly not all. You can rent equipment from any of the nearby shops (one is less than 100 yards from the houses) for the week, a day, or anything in between. And I believe there is unlimited “switching” of gear permitted when there’s a change in wind strength, or you want to try more challenging gear. You will probably need at least a “shorty” wet suit, but I’d recommend both a shorty and a full wet suit to cover the range of possible temps. (you can rent these locally if you don’t own them presently)
Weather: As a rule, temperatures are still warm in the Outer Banks in early October. Usually in the 70’s-80’s. But that can change quickly if there’s a North wind that comes in, in which case, temps can drop into the upper 50’s, low 60’s. Pamlico Sound heats up and cools down quickly, but usually water temperatures are at least 5 degrees warmer than the ocean.
Why: Windsurfers never ask that question, but just in case you’ve got a non-windsurfing spouse, friend (or girlfriend), or significant other who is interested, there’s also miles of magnificent unspoiled and un-crowded beach, plenty of shops, fishing, etc.
Perks!: BABA provides a Monday night “meet and greet” evening party (including food and beverage), AND an on-the-water lunch BABA-Q midweek. Also, most windsurfing shops provide a 10% discount to BABA members during our stay.
Cost: $250 single/den, or $500 private room … most private rooms have private baths as well.
(plus $20 annual 2013 BABA member dues)
