|
|
Hi !
I recently used a Naish Evolution (7.6 sqm). My club lend me a North Sail (6 sqm) as the wind was quite heavy. I found the whole gear very light (twice as light as my current gear).
I know for a fact that that my mast is quite light and that my boom is quite heavy (I could compare it with my 5 other booms).
Can I assume that a North Sail is lighter than a Naish evolution, even per sqm, and more generally that North Sail are lighter than competiting brands ?
I tried to find a large North Sail (above 7.6 sqm), but on their website, the maximum size is 6 sqm.
Do you think I can find a larger North Sail. Or perhaps, NS does not or no longer manufacture large sails?
More generally, which sails / brands are considered lighter (for those of us who have to uphaul a 7.5 to 8.5 sqm sail) ? |

You should be able to find each brand's weight for a specific size on their respective websites, look for "specifications". North makes sails up to 12.0 meters. Keep in mind that strength & weight are directly related (99% of the time), so buying a light sail may mean buying a weaker sail. You won't be uphauling forever, buy a GOOD sail, one that works for you! _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

So now, can anyone recommend a 8 or 8.5 sqm ultralight freeride sail ? |

I love these sails, but not everybody does. Hot Sails Maui Superfreak, read about them on their website and forum. Definitely light; I only have 7.0, 6.3, and 5.3; larger sizes require a 490 mast, but I have read that the 8.0 will take a 460 mast with long extension. Extremely well made and you don't have to worry about damaging dacron. dhmark |

After weighing many and testing hundreds of sails, I'm convinced that a sail's feel under way is far more dependent on its aerodynamics and its load and mass distribution than on its mass. Some light sails feel cumbersome and heavy when sailing, while some heavy sails feel very light under way.
Then there's the added tonnage of water on top of, in the luff sleeve of, "vacuum-stuck" beneath, and clinging to a sail being uphauled. Here again, the issue is water more than dry scale weight.
That's just one more reason so many of us would rather pound sand or mow the lawn (literally) than use big sails, even though big sails would more than double our planing time. |

Read what ISOBARS says here, then consider Sailworks. Their Retro line is smooth handling, delivers power smoothly, and is extremely well-built. I haven't looked, but I'd guess the weight is right there with lesser brands, which is surprising considering the light "feel". _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

Just look for a sail with the fewest battens, sails for overpowered conditions are built heavier with more battens, for light wind you can use a 5 batten sail. |

Check out the KA Koyote or Kult. I always found them to be pretty light while uphauling. |
