If you hate dog poo, then possibly Pt.Isa isn't the place.
You can go to Shimada Park Marina Bay, but you get goose poo, concrete stairway, and drive up boyz in the hoods. |

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the goose poop!
Those concrete "stadium stairs" are major board hazard.
Probably aiming for Potrero Reach session again today, but launching from PI. |

Pretty at Natural Bridges today and no dog poo or goose poo.
Wind was light so went with the Techno and Ezzy 7.0 and my new boom. Going to finally get to try it out.
Life Guard stops by and chats about going out and says he will help clear folk out of the way when launching and landing. Now that is the second time I hear this.
I launch and get past the break without incident. Wind my way through the kelp bed, not having made it windward enough to go out the channel. Sail out to near the buoy and then am headed in. I noticed the boom has slipped down on the mast. Did not set something right. Decide to go in and adjust on the beach.
Make my adjustments and get ready to launch. However, when I go to launch the lifeguard is not around and two young guys were enjoying the swell sets right where I needed to launch. So I go out and politely ask if they can come in until I launch. The swell is smaller than yesterday and a bit more time between sets. Good thing I cleared the water as while I thought I had timed it to go out after the set, there was one more wave. I tried to grab the sail to duck dive it, but I was not near the tip. The wave grabbed the sail and while I tried to hang on it somersaulted me and ripped it all out of my hands. The gear gets caught in the wave wash and the sail gets covered in sand. It takes a few waves to get it clear and get it back up on the beach. Glad I had cleared the launch site.
Accessing the damage, I see two rips in the sail and the boards recently repaired nose is broken. Darn! When I was de-rigging later, I also found I had broken a batten. I trek up to the van to get my repair-all kit. I come back with the duct tape, but all is too wet to let it stick. At least the new boom did not break. Ironic that my new boom is why I came in and resulted in damage to the board and sail.
Wind is picking up and conditions are just too nice. I launch with the kit as is and go out to see what it can do in its wounded state.
I have a great session. Who says you cannot sail with rips in your sail and your board with a broken nose? The nose was out of the water most of the time and the swell was now fun to play on. I achieved 24.3 mph maximum and close to it many times. In a somewhat similar day I had achieved 25.6 mph. So were the rips in the sail only taking off about a knot? I would think a bit more, but I was happy with what I had as the fact that it still functioned so well saved the day for me.
Post session I had a beer at the Humble Sea Brewing Company while I contemplated what it would take to get a truly seaworthy kit together again. May check with Davenport Surf and Sail tomorrow on the price of a new sail. May check on another used Techno that I think a person might be interested in selling. Meanwhile the Allie Ale tastes good! |

Nice day at Marina Bay. Steady southerly wind all the way to the beach launch. |

Heavy day at the Stick- 30+ and 6.0. Lol. Most crowded I have ever seen. Great side show action inside the park and on Jamestown. Talk about amazing drivers. |

Almost Heaven on a 5.7. Went back for a second helping after almost de-rigging. Shlepping up the hill twice is tough on the old bones but today it was well worth it.
ветердует indeed! |

Curious - was this session at Marina Bay (Shimada Park, or?) and if so, what time and what hill? Trying to calibrate iWind readings. |

More like a mound than a hill - after hour plus my perspective was skewed. Felt like a hill!
The launch was the small beach at the end of Marina Bay across from Brooks Isl where the kiddie park is. Most days there are as many kiters (old kids) as little kids. The wind was good at the launch, lighter towards the dog park and good heading toward Pt. Potrero. From 2 to 4 for me and maybe a little earlier and a little later. Maybe not so good for the 4.7 crowd but perfect for a 5.7 and 150lb. The actual wind at this launch is usually somewhere between Pt. Isabel and Pt. Potrero reading. Best when SSW and there's an eddy. |

Great, thanks!
I've launched many times long ago from Shimada Park - the steps about 200 yds east of that beach. Not so good due to lower tide muck plus often hard to get offshore. Then the hazardous scramble up those cement "stadium steps" upon return. Fortunately, I think they have been eliminated from the latest Pt. Isabel remodel plan.
Will have to try it one of these days - Vincent Park I believe. |
