Do you think anyone has ever experimented with magnets instead of footstraps? I'm imagining a magnetic bootie or shoe with polar magnets mounted in the board. No footstraps!

Used only for beginners or those learning to freeride. As your foot gets close to the spot, you don't look, it just gets "sucked in" to perfect position? No footstraps to stumble over! I know your laughing.

Could be quick release if you fall, depending on magnet strength. Just push up or twist to release the bond if you want to get out?

Don't know anything about magnets except I think they can be incredibly strong and small?

Could this possibly work to help those learning? Downside could be pretty funny as your back foot gets stuck in your front footstrap as your walking around. Okay bad idea, maybe downright dangerous?

Okay, electro magnets. Use 4 watts (small D cell battery), 19-25 lbs of holding power per foot. Rigged so when you release your hands from the boom, it shuts off, releasing feet. Iso, you on this?

Having broken my ankle, and recently twisted my knee as a result of foot stuck in straps, I'm liking this idea. Sailing in waves you need to be able to leverage the top of your foot against the top of the strap to sink the rail into the wave face. I've always thought there needs to be something that releases like a ski boot binding.

Have you been following the thread on Safety Foot Strap at

Oh, yes ... almost forgot: gravity. I sailed this whole summer, in everything the Gorge threw at us, on my strapless windSUP. That includes days averaging 35 with overhead swell, with all the usual fully-railed off-the-lip and bottom snap turns. If kiters can do it, why can't we?

BTW, straps beat strapless ALL to hell, and I have yet to lose any shred time to injury from straps. Discomfort, yes, even some level of front-foot injury due to falling with my back foot out of its strap, but not enough to keep me off the water. Got plain-old knocked out of both straps Friday twice in 200 yards by giant gusts on top of 40+ average winds, but the operative word both times was "out", as in clean releases. I still quit, though; I don't like playing Russian roulette with my joints with only one empty chamber.
