Friends have just bought a house on the lake. I see there's some wind there, but Google brings up no useful references to windsurfing there.

Likely lots of kids, and novice adults, so maybe put together a beat up rig to keep there.

However, what are the conditions like there, anything to know? I'm told the place is by the freeway, but I don't know the area.

Hi Mrchocky,

I looked at the lake several times when was working on my never published 3rd. edition of my Windfinder windsurfing guide. Strong wind is not common there but there can be some long board or SUP windsurfing at times.

There are several wind sensors near or around the lake along with model forecasts you can find on Windalert.com.

See the locations of these on the image below.

Have fun.

I'm at Almanor right now, stay & sail here once a year. The dominate wind direction has been out of the northwest. This is a huge lake with mountains & trees right up to the water everywhere except at the town of Chester where the water is very shallow. This lake is so big it can be white capping on one side & dead calm on the other so you can have big swells with no wind due to long fetch. Possible nightmare for a novice. There is also a large peninsula that divides the lake in two.

The main issues here are wind shadows so location is everything. Best equipment would be a long board and rig that you would be comfortable with low teens and gusts to the low 20's. Like the S.F. Bay the wind is often strongest out in the middle so the issue is getting there.

Yesterday I was out there for 2 hours using a 7.5 well powered @ 170 lbs. I did have to Schlogg for 1/4 mile to get to the wind.

As for wind meters, they are not very accurate. I sailed from the west end boat launch towards the Lake Almanor Country Club between 4:30-6:30 pm with winds 14-17 mph & lulls 8-12 out of the west to NW. According to the airport meter I was sailing in SW to ENE winds between 3-5 mph. Trust the wind models here, not the meters.
