Will epoxy work?
I saved the barrel and screw.

I am still a newbie when it comes to repairs. Having said that, why not repair it with fiberglass?

I would dig a rectangular area with a router on both sides to apply fiber glass, making sure it goes on top of the hole. The depth of the dug areas has to be sufficient to allow the barrel to be held by at least 50% of this new material. The center area could then be repaired from the top but I would fear delamination and would not rely too much on this for strength.

I hope others will chime in...

Repairing it is a bad idea.
The structural fiberglass is broken in a VERY critical area.
As said already, check your board for finbox damage too.
Buy a new fin or get a good used fin.
Powerbox fin bases, masts or boom arms are not repairable.

I'd say get another fin. Just looks prone to breaking in that area when you sail. Not fun losing the fin when sailing.

I used to repair fins like yours when I was young and poor. However, your time is worth more than $10 per hour isn't it.

If you epoxy the barrel back in, cut two grooves on either side. Then build the epoxy into the grooves and around the top of the barrel. Then grind it all down to fit. You're in! This will take about 4 hours of dinking around, and require materials and tools. Might want to buy a used fin for $40 and enjoy your free time.

ps, those were pleasant hours spent in my garage.....and usually the fin only lasted until I hit another rock!!!

the only reliable way to fix that is to change the head completely
people do do that , butt they are real DIYs/do it yourselvers
for average joes like me - it's throw away or frisbee time !! Sad
too critical a piece and broken at critical point
on the fin itself - repair away

Just a little structural glass and you're all set. Perfect for use in Barnegat Bay and other shallow water places where there's leftover Sandy debris. It's breakaway, without ruining your finbox. Just carry a second fin with you.

The powerbox fin base has a cut out compared to the tuttle box and there doesn't seem to be corresponding bump inside the PB finbox so can't I just fill that entire space with epoxy or whatever to make it stronger?
It was amazing how easily the barrel nut ripped out of the fin, I had just beach started, went about 10' barely moving, felt the slightest tick and the board went 180. It's the windsup stock fin, 44cm so it has a lot of leverage.
I suppose there is a balancing point between the fin tearing out or the finbox breaking but it seemed like it came out too easy.
