Steves post on the mast extension questions thread made me think about when I trashed an old Fleetwood extension and a harness hook on a wipeout. Rather than jack that thread I thought it might be fun to post pics and stories of wipeout carnage.
While I couldn't find the base that got the whole pulley block ripped off of it, I did find the hook. It was your typical ragdoll, ripped out of the straps and over the handlebars type thing. The only thing that was different was when I finally recovered from this I realized I lost the downhaul tension in my sail. Then I realized I couldn't hook in and stay hooked in. Man that took some G-force to do this....

That ain't sh..... Very Happy
At 145 lbs., I've got over 7 broken aluminun black spreader bars, 3 Reactor bars where the folded over metal fatiqued and cracked. NO chrome plated bars broken.
5 boards broke in half landing jumps, so it couldn't be sailed home, either complete deck breaks or clean breaks into two pieces.
More than 12 broken carbon masts, no skinnies.
About that many carbon booms and over 10 broken aluminum booms.
I'm a strong 145 lbs'er.

Snapped multiple DaKine chrome/steel harness hooks ... in gusts, not crashes ... and on hooks that never saw salt water.

Deck box exploded on new HiTech.

Catapult left one Okespore dry boot in its strap (it takes minutes to remove one deliberately).

Booms and masts snapped by gusts.

Many harness explosions.

Buckled helmets ripped off my head several times.

To obtain maximum slammage, keep bar/hook as low as possible. Higher bar height usually puts me in the water feet first.

LeeD here....
Oh, and all the carnage, none were crashes, or falls. EVERY single one, the part broke, I was still sailing fine, then fell, of course.

To obtain maximum distance and/or altitude in a catapult, bear off, sheet in, thrust down as hard as you can with hands and feet ... and make DAMNED sure you're unhooked. Wink

My worst wipeout (yet) happened almost exactly 3 years ago, when I got drilled in a rogue shorebreak scenario. Check out the story toward the end of this blog post:

Yikes!
