I have the new fanatic freewave 85L which has the trifin or thruster setup. When i put the side fins in i have about an inch of space in front and back, in the slot.

My ques: Does anyone know what the effects would be(if any) if i had the side fins all the way forward or aft in the slot ?? right now i have been just putting them in the middle.

anyway.... great board...but with the weeds starting to come out i may have to go single fin for awhile....(although i see some weed thruster fins coming out...Makani fins)

far right are these weed fins from Makani. the small ones are 10cm.
Nice fin fast and hardly a weed fin. I would also consider HIGHLY the K4s with 2 degree toe and asymmetrical inside foils, these will work great with your board which has 1 degree of toe on the sides. If windy enough I don't notice weeds on the small multi fins I use, the non weed fins even 8cm do collect some.

They are exceptions to every rule but generally speaking:

The closer the fins are together the looser the board

The further up the board the WHOLE cluster is placed the looser the board.

The further Apart the the cluster the turns will be more drawn out-stiffer.

Combining these you can see how the fin setup can be balanced.

What is the difference between a close together cluster placed in the middle and a wider cluster placed forward in the box? Based on the logic of multi fins both will make the board looser and less drivey.

The shortest answer is it depends are where the boxes are placed in relation to the tail, if you come back too far, or too far forward, I have no idea how it feels , except squirrel y

If the wider cluster is wide //further//apart back: the fins WILL still be more apart than the small boxes will allow them to be placed, in respect to close and middle

so they will never be in the same box position as your first setting, close and middle.

If you varied each box say 2cm forward or aft their would be a difference in feel,

the cluster is the box placement:: more so than movement within the fin box, but of course both apply. Yes its rocket science, and here is me still trying to figure out my solar calculator.

If you vary the position of the pivot fins, the larger set, you would accentuate the theory, .. theory.

skyking

since you can only move the side boxes on your Fanatic, I would suggest go forward and rearward to the extreme under thew same conditions.

but you probably already thought of that
