Anyone been windsurfing at Hyeres France. I have a wedding in Southern France 40 min from Hyeres at the end of August and was thinking about taking some time to visit the area and get some windsurfing in if the conditions are right.

Any suggestions/advice: good places to stay, rent gear? Is the end of August a good time for conditions in Hyeres? I would like to get some waves but am happy with some European Freestyle as well.

Hyeres can blow like snot if the Mistral is on. August isn't the windiest month of the year there...

I was in Hyeres once in late May and didn't find much wind. There are a few WS rental shops there though. I think your only shot in the summer would be a rare frontal wind. Place is kind of east coast-like in the summer, warm air/water, not much of anything to drive a pressure gradient.

If you have time, take a ferry over to Corsica and then go to the southern part of the island near Bonifacio; you'll have a better shot at sailing down there with the trade winds between Corsica and Sardinia.

Hyeres' famous spot is Almanarre, made famous in the late 80's.
The area is really gorgeous, definitely a lesser-known part of the french riviera. If you don't score any wind, visits the islands ashore Hyeres, they offer amazing diving.
It has also great rental gear apparently: http://www.wwwindsurfing.com/global-shop-directory/funboard-center-almanarre/

Definitely worth a look, who knows you might score a session!

For what it is worth, I have been there. How's your French? I have inquired about equipment rentals, but never did any sailing. If you put in a serious effort you may put it together. It can be crowded in August, however. Paris pretty much empties out in that month. Canicule is the word for heat wave in French. Just because I know what it is should be a warning to you.
