iceratz, I'd like to give it a go sometime if you'd be so accommodating as to lend me a board. I'm assuming a smaller sail comparable to being on the ocean is the way to go?
Aloha

Josh, we sometimes sail at Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, not far from Nahant.
Yes, smaller sails are required, 3.4 - 5.0, cambered for speed, or simple rotating sleeves for tricks....BTW..sorry but there will be NO airiels!

I'll be sure to post our activity here on iWindsurf and see what I can do about getting a loaner board...I got several loaner GT-31 GPS's, so maybe you'll also make it to the results of GPS Icesailing this year!

Iceratz = Jeff Brown, my buds call me Brownie.

Wish you well with your new son!

Jeff, this might be a dumb question but I always wondered about wearing a drysuit when ice sailing for a last bit of safety.

Not a dumb question.
I have heard of some ice sailing folks who use dry suits or survival suits. But I have never considered it myself. If you are sailing on ice conditions that are that dicey, then maybe you just should not be sailing there period.

The one important thing to have is a pair of ICE AWLS, two handles with sharpened spikes, connected with a rope lanyard to hang around your neck. The pointed ends are concealed into opposite handles of each other.
Guys make them easy from 2 nails and broomstick handle. I use woodworker's / sailmaker's awls.

So, if you went in, you can deploy the awls and pick your way back up onto the ice sheet , even thin stuff, and crawl back to safety.

If you only relyed on a drysuit as your safety, then you would have to sit in the water for a long period until someone else rescued you.
Bottom line is, you need to get out of icy water ASAP, 10 min or less.
Emersed longer than that will surely bring on hypothermia, even in a drysuit.
So, I guess what I am saying is, a dry suit is a false sense of security for ice sailing.

i;m not sure that follow the ice fishermen is the mantra. locally here in nh they usually put a truck and/or a couple of snowmobiles into the water each season.

I should add that although ice fishermen may often not be that wise when driving over ice, they do have a keen understanding of the thickness they are on when fishing as they drill so many holes. I often go directly to new ice fishing holes to get a quick idea of what thickness we got.

Then again, today's ice fishing holes are tomorrow's hazardous drain holes after a thaw....
I hate drain holes......a few of my worst accidents have occured. Shocked

NEW ICE REPORTS

Confirmed Kitewing sailing on Lake Waukewan yesterday, Merrideth NH (see pic nice surface!)

Also reports of iceboats on Lake Quaboag in Brookfield Mass just past Worcester.

This weeknd outlook is really good for both temps and winds on Saturday & Sunday, westerlies 20+

When I hear another reliable surface quality report from Quaboag then that will likely be the spot to try.

MORE NEW REPORTS

Looks like a few Cape region Iceboarders will likely try out Lake Winnicunnet in Norton this weekend. Still needs a full scouting on kicksled or skates, but its worth a shot for sure for sailing.

Exit 9 Bay St off 495
Go East 1/4 mile to roadside parking.

Quaboag is reported as having more bumpy conditions. Iceboaters will be there in force regardless.

Waukewan is THE place to be if you are in NH!

hey, Quaboag is my "home base" windsurfing locale since it's so close to me.
I didn't realize it was so popular for ice sailing !
hmmm, tempting

I searched the internet, not much out there for manufacturers. Seems like Hiberna and T2, but they're $$ and looks like they not really a US market item...looks like a lot of people make DIY boards.

Iceratz is doing a great job promoting winter windsurfing, but lack of ice board availability makes it very difficult for newbies to access this sport.

Holding on to an old ice deck you're not using or know someone who is? Why not put it up for sale, rental, or loan so someone new can get out on the ice !

you are right.

I have a setup that I once went 53MPH on before I lost my icesailing balls.

Norm Farr custom wood/ carbon deck. wide rear trucks. works best under 170 lbs due to custom bend.

PM me if you are interested. the blades need major work. maybe Iceratz can help you there if you are nice to him.

I fear the future of water windsurfing will be the same as ice windsurfing today as as us old guys die off and equipment suppliers continue to go out of business.....
