Sometimes the wrong mast works better than the right mast on a particular sail. The sail designer ,over time, will figure out why that would be.
Meanwhile they got to keep selling sails, with a yearly upgrade at a certain time of year. The really great version with right mast combo and perfect rig settings may wind up only ever getting sailed by one guy who happened to have it when they moved on to the 2008 lineup of models.
Everyone else is still using the wrong mast combo because it is printed on the sail way back in the beginning before they could sail them a while and sort them out.
Try everything. Change settings while you are sailing. Put those odd mast setups on different sails and get a happy surprise once or twice. |
your reply goes a step further towards mast and sail match up.
The question is should the OP CUT a existing 430 into a 370 or a 400. _________________ K4 fins

If you want to go to all the trouble to do it correctly, you can cut your mast and get a good result.
So if you want to, you need to find out where the perfect flex is on the 430 to match the sails desired mast flex. You can measure the IMCS http://www.peterman.dk/mast-imcs-formulas.htm and bend curve of your 430 and by moving around the supports at the base and tip, you can find the best 370cm of mast, then cut off the top and bottom to get that mast. Personally, if it turned out some needed to come off the top I'd leave it alone and just rig the adjustable top appropriately.
Alternatively, if you can borrow a 370 that works for that sail, you can just compare the two to get your correct 370cm section.
But you're not done yet. The bottom of the mast is re-enforced not to split where the base sticks out. If you don't wrap that part, the mast may split. |

and you still need to add one full layer of glass wrap around the boom attachment area, making two spots you need to add glass wrap for reinforcement, and you still get a mast stiffer than a 400 after it's cut down to 370. |

I get it, you're a cheap bastard!
Why don't you just gouge one of your rich patients like you do before your numerous Hawaii vacations?
That's how I get all my new gear!
