I had a situation where the previous owner of my spot had been using some kind of poison under a shed on the property. After smelling death for years on end, I wondered when it would end. Finally after finding that skunks were running under the shed, I closed off all possible access. Fortunately, some time after that, the smell of death ended.

Rather than poison, I'm of the opinion that there are more practical ways to end pest infestation. If there is no access to safe harbor, pests move on.
