I used to argue that requiring firearm training would decrease the potential for firearm deaths. Maybe it would for accidents. But, not likely if a disturbed individual is looking to plan a mass shooting.

This, IMO, is why you can't look at trying to fix this issue by fixing one piece. Everything is tied into it. We need smarter gun laws, better enforcement and a commitment to providing mental health PREVENTATIVE services for young children. We are doing none of those things very well so far.

We will have this entire conversation again. Unfortunately.

You left out the most important thing IMO, protection for the students, if there is anything that they should be demanding with their marches and demonstrations it is the lack of protection. Protection is the most easily achievable thing that could be done in the shortest amount of time.
Airports and sporting events have it, so why not the schools, kids are people also.

When I was in high school, late 60's, San Diego, all the junior and high schools were closed campuses, that being there was only one way in and out during the school hours, the main entrance. The reason was to gain control of truancy, or ditching class, it worked. Then in 1969, for whatever reason, they opened up all the campuses, you could come and go thru a variety of access points at anytime during the day. It still remains that way, and only invites problems of various sorts.
We all wish that we could return to the days when school shootings were extremely rare, closing all the access points with the exception of the main entrance, would be part of that desire.
That, combined with professional campus protection, could go a long way in a very short amount of time.

Great idea NW. Why not include metal detectors in every theater, library, mall, concert venue, club, store, church, synagogue, mosque and restaurant?

The guy bought the damn gun like he was buying soap. How about banning the fucking sale and manufacture of God Damn assault weapons! What the fuck does anyone need that shit for?

My God.

Unlike many other conservatives, I have no problem with that, military weaponry should stay w/in the military, but trying to get them all off the streets and out of the hands of civilians would be very time consuming at best, and near impossible at worst.
Time is of the essence, which is my main point.
I believe the concept that the next shooter is out there and already armed.
I also have a problem with "Gun free zone" signs, whether you are or not, you shouldn't advertise it, you may as well put up a sign that says, "We are a soft target".

BTW, bump stocks are on their way out according to the latest news.

Easier CCW for upstanding well trained citizens is essential. They don't have these atrocities in areas with easy CCW. We are sheep without it.

PS, more people are killed with clubs than assault weapons. As a matter of fact, only 2% of murders are with rifles. AR15 is a pea shooter compared with hunting rifles.

NRA with Russian money trained the newest florida mass school shooter....

again he is a NRA member right wing trained to kill......

https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/florida-school-shooting-nikolas-cruz-was-on-rifle-team-that-got-nra-grant/?__twitter_impression=true

Florida school shooting suspect was on rifle team that got NRA grant

Quote:
The troubled teen authorities say killed 17 people at a Florida high school excelled in an air-rifle marksmanship program supported by a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation, part of a multimillion-dollar effort by the gun group to support youth shooting clubs. Nikolas Cruz, 19, was wearing a maroon shirt with the logo from the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when he was arrested Wednesday shortly after the shooting.

Former JROTC cadets told The Associated Press that Cruz was a member of the small varsity marksmanship team that trained together after class and traveled to other area schools to compete.

Typical left wing BS. The NRA sponsored the shooting program, I doubt that the kids were itching to sign up with the NRA.

Maybe Baja's left would prefer that shooting training / gun safety be eliminated.

The issue is mental health programs, but that is worthless unless society figures a way to identify those in need and channels them into worthwhile programs. So far, it's pretty much a total failure, at least with this kid.

Come on, this is a stupid argument. You have kids. What would you have preferred, their school getting attacked by someone with a club or someone with an AR-15?

I also think the argument that it'll be too hard to get weapons off the streets is not a good one. It's certainly hard to get drugs off the streets, yet few people argue to not even try.

We could ban assault weapons and get 95% of them off the streets in pretty short order...We could also upgrade the registration/purchase system almost overnight...But the Republicans in Congress are not motivated, its that simple.. The NRA gave $45mm in 2016 elections... job security.

The 95% that you get off the street are the 95% who will never commit a crime.

PS, multiple handguns would be far more deadly than an AR15. For close quarters, the AR15 is idiotic. I'm actually surprised that the mass shooters aren't using handguns. Far more effective. Real police and military action in enclosed settings always involve handguns.

Results Caliber Testing medium Penetration Condition of bullet
.223 Rem. gelatin only 9.5" two pieces
.223 Rem. wall & gelatin 5.5" * fragmented
.40S&W gelatin only 13.5" mushroomed
.40S&W wall & gelatin 22" * no deformation
.40S&W wall & gelatin 22" * no deformation
.40S&W wall & gelatin 19.5" * slight deformation
12 ga. wall & gelatin 27.5" mushroomed

So go ahead and ban the AR platform. The idiots will move on to bigger and better methodologies. And of course there are always trucks.
