Guns aside, I have very mixed feelings about them. I want to know why are people doing this. My feeling is its about the information age , and social media. People connecting to fast, being able to get info and communicate with other sick people, and feeling the need to belong to something , even if its evil.

Guns have been around a long time, but this new wave of mass killings has never been like this...

Guns kill 30 people each day in murders and 60 each day in suicides. The NRA has convinced low-information conservatives that reasonable gun control will result in the government confiscating their hunting rifles. They will believe that they are trying to preserve the America of 1775--and ignore the fact that they are replicating the Libya of 2011.

I think you nailed it. Mentally ill, suicidal, nobodies see a way to be memorialized by committing mass murder. Becoming famous on the internet and other media has gone way overboard. Just look at all the crazy attempts at fame on u-tube. Do something really stupid and a million folks get to watch.

I recently read that some think that keeping the murderer's identity secrete may deter the crazies from committing mass killings since they will not be identified. Maybe so, but I doubt that in our current information age and media frenzy, it can't be achieved, but maybe worth trying.

Then there are the other radicals that kill and sacrifice themselves for a cause. Nothing will stop them except exceptional investigative work and keeping them out of the country where possible.

I doubt that more gun control and or better mental health care will have any impact on the mass killing crisis. I don't have an answer.

And in case some liberals want to jump in with my last statement, I have no problem with background checks for ALL gun purchases including gun shows, but it will never function well enough to solve the problem.

Possible situation. I have a gun and want to sell it to my neighbor. I have had it for years and there is no state or federal record of my ownership. Background check???? Not going to happen very often if ever.

Techno--there are no perfect solutions. But there are things that make improvements--which both you and I support.

Most murders are in poor communities, not mass shootings. Many of the guns for those murders are obtained by theft. My son-in-law is on the street in Oakland as a police officer. Very few police officers oppose laws that make it harder for criminals to get guns.

Jonestown: koolaide.
WTC: airplanes.
Boston: bombs.
Subways: gas.
Oklahoma City: bomb.
Airliner hijackings: bombs, box cutters, taking over the controls ...
Arson.
Blunt instruments.
Knives, machetes, automobiles,

YET the left focuses entirely on guns ... the only weapon above with any practical value in STOPPING a mass killing real time.

Killing them wherever they stand, as Hillary promised to do when debating Senator Obama, comes to mind. But that would take a set of gonads lacking in our current Eunuch in Chief.
