The bad guys will always find weapons. Please don't take them from the good guys. |

An idyllic scenario at a beach in England warm enough to wear a bathing suit. Becoming a more common phenomenon, for some unknown reason. Used to justify bias against Muslims.
All children do not live idyllic lives. The children of evangelicals in America, in particular, are beaten to beat the devil out of them. Encouraged by liturgical fervor. Other children are ignored or abused by parents, for a variety of reasons. None of it is good--but there are two questions we must ask ourselves. First, can we do something about it that we are sure makes things better, and second, are we judging a whole culture, or race, or ethnicity, based on the behavior of a few.
Here is perhaps another clue in the nature of disaffection and bigotry. In a letter to the editor in the Jul 27 New Yorker, a Hispanic man from Chapel Hill N. C. relates his experience on Halloween when he and his wife dressed as Muslims and went downtown. One of the more liberal places in the South--but they were berated with Islamophobic insults and told to go back home. Not a coincidence that 3 Muslim students were killed there this past winter.
Of course I'm sure that such behavior has disappeared from England, and has nothing to do with alienation of young Muslims. After all, there are still Irish to torture.
There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, nearly a quarter of the population. There are perhaps half a million terrorists justifying their actions with religious texts that are no more extreme than some in the bible. There are far more right wingers in this country alone who are bigoted against Muslims, among other groups. |

Don't bite GT. He has an insatiable appetite for conflict and acrimony. I'm sure that, like me, you have far better things to do than feed his craving. |

Note the 'couldn't resist it' reference to those peace loving men of the I.R.A. Says it all! |

Come on mac, let's not get too judgmental about Islamic immigration, and the overall affect it's has in the UK, France or other European nations. It's not our backyard, so it's important not to get too carried away with the crap going on the sidelines, and how it's being twisted in an untoward way. In my view, folks need to fit into the culture and work to benefit the nation as a whole. The idea of isolated enclaves of folks that don't fit is troublesome, and it's ultimately a threatening element in society.
Here in America, we welcome folks celebrating the American vision and supporting our rich traditions. Few have acceptance for a separate, less tolerant world in our midst. A celebration of cultural heritage is generally welcomed, as long as it doesn't threaten the core American ideal. |

Hassidic Jews in New York, Amish in Pennsylvania, Arabs in Dearborn Michigan - we all get along. |

Signing off note -
Peter Hitchens, paper today in response to the Prime Minister and his speech highlighting the problem we face in our country from militant Islamism. ( He perfectly captures the growing mood and anger in our land.)
' Mr Cameron and Mr Blair and their predecessors over decades, have gone a long way to Islamising this country through uncontrolled immigration and state multi-culturalism. They have begun to panic because they at last realise what they have done, and rightly fear they cannot stop it.'
Quite so sir! Nail on head! |

Germany has had similar integration issues with a large Turkish population that replenished the decimated workforce after WWII.
While I will not present the history of this as an unfettered success, it serves as a great example:
The problems were not in the numbers of Turks, their Religion or customs, nor were they insurmountable. At fault was a mutual encapsulation and cultural segregation that led to the development of Turkish labourer ghettos. It took generations for Turks to become German and now represent an ethnic minority of German citizens. What changed, was decades long efforts by liberal and progressive local governments producing opportunities for integration, German language training for non-working Turkish family members and integration of children into the public school system.
If islamist and neo-nationalist forces manage to drive a wedge between immigrant and native populations, any economical stress will rapidly exacerbate and deepen the rift. It takes hard work to integrate, but a multi-cultural society is not one where there are homogenous bubbles of foreign populations that share zero interest with the native population are tolerated and ignored until problems surface. _________________ florian - ny22
