|
|
Has anyone heard or experienced anything about the performance of the 2013 Exocet RS7 90 cm wide Raceboard? For instance, how early it planes compared to a formula board, speed, jibing ease, upwind, downwind and reaching ability, handling chop, etc.? I'm thinking of buying one and any info I could get would sure help. Thanks. |

i am just as curious as you ...
John Ingebritsen comments about it a little bit here
http://www.iwindsurf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24446
basically it seems a choice between JP SPLW, SB US and Exocet RS7 in today's market for what i call FreeFormula ie just smaller than true Formula
It seems people prefer the SB over the JP in tests and John likes the Exocet as much as the SB... |

Some sailors around here have 90 cm boards, mostly Slabs.
Less upwind and downwind angle than Formula, slightly easier handling for smaller sailors, not the same early planing only because it usually doesn't carry as much fin, it's a compromise board. Something more up and downwind than slalom, but not matching up to Formula.
Some thing slghtly faster than Formula on a reach, but not quite the speed of slalom.
Compromise is always that. Shoud you concentrate on it's plus's, or it's minus's?
But if you're limited to smaller sails, or a lightweight, it might be a very good non competitive solution to a light wind problem.
If you are big, you need the pure float and width of Formula for the lighter winds. |

FreeFormula like this works fine for me and I am 100 kilos
They usually take fins of 58 to 70 cm which is close enuff to Formula, non?
does anyone know the OFO of this board and max suggested fin size?? |

simple guideline, OFO board width equals max fin size. anything longer is too much lift for the widest wind range. more longa, means a bit better in the lightest of winds, but watch out if the wind comes up. hairballs ensue. fin flex is a whole other element. stiffer for gusty choppy is better. soft for glassy and light winds. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

Problem here is that some very experienced sailors find about a 2-3 mph difference in reaching speeds between fully powered slalom vs just powered Formula, on a reach.
So if you increase Formula speed a hair, you still don't approach slalom baord speeds.
And if you go small Formula, you DEFINITELY lose out on upwind and downwind angle, plus some early planing due to the extra width.
So what is the gain? |

as StarBoard said back in 2002
"Inspired from Starboard's racing development program, the FreeFormulas are for sailors who wish to be extremely fast in light and medium winds yet have a board that remains enjoyable to jibe and controllable when the wind picks up.
With a pace that can compete with racing boards, the FreeFormulas sacrifice absolute pointing ability for speed on the reach and jibing performance. These boards can actually be even faster than the Formulas on the reach. Like the full-blown Formulas, the FreeFormulas are supplied with high performance race fins that maximize early planing, speed and acceleration."
So, unless you are racing, it sounds like fun to me.
Usually use sails up to 10-oh and fins less than 66 cm.
and it makes cents le$$ |

Sorry to say this...
You must be pretty gullible to believe in Starboard's advertisements and such promotions. They are the #1 board seller because they market themselves as the best since their advent in the late '90's. |
