So, what's the latest you've ever sailed?

" Heck, you don't even need booties in the Bay ... EVER ... given its wintertime low water temps of 46 degrees."

booties are not just for cold water. depending on where you sail it could be for protection against flesh eating bacteria, rusty nails, razor sharp mussels..

personally, i don't use them.

---

for california or wherever water is always in liquid form,
why would you even ask this question?
if it's windy enough, you go sail!
who cares what month it is.

2010 Dec. 29, Alameda, very gusty and cold clearing winds, very cold water, 5.0. My skills were much less adequate than I believed at the time. I lost my gear and significantly endangered myself.

I was the only windsurfer out, but there were some kiteboarders, one of whom got into trouble. I had just bought binoculars to try to spot my gear, and ended up helping some kiteboarders on the beach to keep eyes on him. A combination of ebb tide and drift finally got him to walking depth, and people drove over to retrieve him.

December 13th at Arroyo Laguna. Perfect 5.0 day but small waves.
Lots of elephant seals, and a docent giving us the evil eye..but if you fish, surf or sail, they can't keep you off the beach.

From Nov 1st to Mar 31st there are only about 25 days at most with wind > 15kts. Half of the 25 happen in March. So on average, 4 days per month Nov-Feb. One of the biggest challenges in the winter is that the days are so short that many storms happen in the night time.
October was very good this year I scored over 15 days on 5.2 or smaller. Nov is the worst month, no stotms no clearing no westerly on very weak N/NE. The coldest months are Dec-Feb. Pre-storm air temperature is generally pleasant except for the Alaskan fronts brrrr. The clearing winds are colder even with sunny blue skies. I'd say freezing cold.

I'm not sure exactly, but maybe definitely after midnight.

Oh? That wasn't the question?

January 2012, Brannon Island Sacramento River 40k,
or maybe that is the earliest

Thanksgiving Day 1993, Cape Hatteras, the cape
Anyone that was there will remember it as one of the best wave sailing days on the east coast ever.

All winter long at Black Butte and the Afterbay. Last time I was at BB the water was so cold I felt like I had been knocked out when my head went underwater! Came up and it took a few seconds to remember where I was. Investing in a hood for sure!

there are a few of us here at Lake Isabella who never quit - though the sessions get shorter and shorter as the winter wears on and snow melt enters the equation. I've made friends with a number of fishermen these past 2 winters, who invite me to warm up at their fires between "rounds". We each think that the other is nuts...

during tourist season, when hundreds of people with often diametrically opposed ideas as to what constitutes fun, all clamor for the same few yards of good beach access, yeah, tempers flare, and fights erupt. But in the off-season, its just a very few die-hards against nature, and mutual respect is the norm. I worked to establish decent relations with the dozen or so year-round fishermen on "my" corner of the lake: I bring them worms from my compost pile, and they share their catch; I float out on my board to land a snaggled fish, and they invite me to their fires to warm up. In the process, we get to know each other a bit and find that the other isn't all bad.
