Happened to look over at Ano Nuevo from Waddell yesterday -- Occasionally massive sets would march towards the island, gigantic plumes, looked like Mavericks or outer Sprecks. Anybody ever catch it? Guess it would be straight offshore plus wildlife issues.

PS Think I finally stumped LeeD.

I think it's too shadowed by the big headland to windsurf there. South swells of size, yes can create big barreling waves there for sure! Quite a sight or a fright to see relatively calm looking water erupt into a train of big chugging barrels as a set comes in. _________________ Carve the face! |

Oh, my comment above was about the surf break located in the southern portion of the park nearest Hwy 1. Were you referring to the off-shore island? Sounds wild dude!
Fxop, did you windsurf Waddell yesterday? Howazit? _________________ Carve the face! |

Yes, I was referring to the island. Can't imagine anybody has ever challenged it.
Waddell was great. Big long walls, sets with 10 or more waves. Very southerly swell, so waves didn't really peel downwind, but walls big enough to get a couple of bottom turns at least. Just barely enough wind, medium size people were on 5.6+ and plenty slogging.
Was driving south on 1, and about 5 miles north of Pescadero rounded the corner and for some reason that part of the coast was attracting the swell perfectly, lines out to the horizon, no breaks and very little wind on the water. Looked like Endless Summer. A few miles later Pescadero was hardly pulling anything at all.

I used to surf the hollow right hander near the cliff...There was a big rock in the lineup as I recall. Haven't been there in years. Always seemed pretty sharky...never saw one, only felt their presence. _________________ /w\ |

The cattle gate N of Ano, with a pretty long flat walk in to the lonesome tree, can be good on big S's. It's kinda a sharky spot, but the outside reefs can peel long lefts, with ONE channel to paddle out just N of the walkway.
Martins Beach is one of the best lefts on big S swells, with Fuller's No.1, of course.
Patrick's Point up past Humbolt also.
Limantour can look great, but it's too shallow and poundy when the S march's in. |

Can't stump him!
However -- these waves looked like they were forming up in deep water at least 1/4 mile south of the "island" -- breaking on something, and then whitewater or a re-form moving on through the gap. Poor vantage point from 3 miles away but impressive nonetheless.
Seems like all the action would be over north of the point. |
