Season 4 Starts Page 7

For the 3rd year in a row Tyson and I will be keeping a running report of all things Baja as we run our wave camps in Punta San Carlos, Baja and then head down South to La Ventana to open up our windsurf resort;
Pro-Windsurf La Ventana.

Check back regularly to keep updated with all the antics, videos, and photos from this season of our Baja life.

Once again the Pro-Windsurf La Ventana, Baja train, made it across the border and down to wonderful, wonderful Punta San Carlos. The first rain of the year started to drizzle as we packed the trailer at Tyson’s house (much lighter than usual, see photos below), the next morning we were off down I-5 headed for Ensenada with sprinkles along the way. Made it to Ensenada on October 12th grabbed a couple tacos but decided to forgo the partying with the idea of getting Tyson’s new dirt bike repaired to rally in on the San Carlos Road. Upon arrival in PSC Rob Warwick and the Windsport Mag test crew reported they had both wind and waves for the last 10 days. With distant forecasts of hurricane south swell we were stoked. Now 7 days later we have had 5 days of powered sailing and 7 days of waves. The front of Hurricane Paul sent some interesting conditions our way but not the epic South Swell we had hoped. Nonetheless running a 7-day wave clinic with a full stock of swell and breeze has been a blast. Today we got word that due to hurricane Paul Mex 1 has been washed out and will not re-open for 3-5 days leaving Baja travelers stuck on the road. Fortunately we are running another wave clinic here next week and won’t have to tempt the road until Oct. 28th.[/b]

Full power 4.0 all day today in San Carlos. We saw wounded hands but not egos today as the days loop lecture paid off. We have a new looper in our group proving that it really can be learned in a single day. Of course it probably did not hurt that he is a helicopter pilot. Still pulling you first forwards in blasting 4.0 conditions is pretty good. I will try to post a photo of them later.

Now we just need our goiter team to step it up tomorrow.

Here goes some more San Carlos eye candy for ya.

After an amazing two weeks at Punta San Carlos with the Makani Fin guys as well as the Solo Sports crew, it was time to head south to La Ventana. Everything started out pretty well, having timed the hurricane really well, we were on the road 10 days after it hit, allowing the Mexican road workers to get everything back to normal. We thought this was going to be the biggest problem on the way down. Turned out that the van was not liking the heat, especially up those long steep hills. We ended up overheating at least twice, but got really lucky as we were at the top of the hill when it happened. All that took was a 20 min break to take some pictures and wait for the van to cool down. Back in the car and ready to roll, we head through a town called Cuidad Constitucion, where we were pulled over pretty quickly by a local cop on a 4 wheeler. We didnt do anything wrong, so we were wondering what the problem was. Turns out the cop just wanted to say hi and ask us where we were going with all the stuff on the trailer and what it was. Then we started to talk about windsurfing, and he wanted to know all about it. So after about 25 mins of chatting it up with the local cop, and sweating our asses off because it was about 105 outside, we were off again, getting closer to all the fun toys waiting for us in La Ventana. With only one more quick stop on the side of the road to take care of some business... as well as let Wyatt play with his new iPone 5 a bit more, we were almost to La Paz. Pulled into La Paz around 5:30 and headed up the hill for the last 30 mins of our drive to La Ventana!!! Stoked, we started blasting music and motoring up one last hill... which we overheated on again and had to delay our arrival for another 30 mins. Oh well, we were there as far as we cared. We got to the house around 7 or so, cracked open some beers, and relaxed. We made it with EVERYTHING!!! Now begins the process of setting up camp, getting the quads running, and of course, enjoying that ice cold Ballena!

Definitely the worst part of the whole Baja road was the section from La Paz to La Ventana.

FridayNov 9th

The winds have kicked in here down in La Ventana. After a couple of really hot, no wind days, setting up the gear sheds, getting dead men dug in put in the ground, and sweating your ass off once you step out the door, we are ready to roll! We finished everything around noon, rigged up and got on the water. No wetsuit needed. I swear, the water is at least 5 degrees warmer that Maui right now. The wind had been up since 9 in the morning. We even got a call from some fellow Los Barrilles sailors asking, "Do you guys even see a wind line over there, or is this forecast a load of BS?" Don't know if they got any of it, but it was a ripping day over here. I was on my 100lt freestyle board with a 4.8 and was pretty lit. Sailed out in front of our place for a bit, then sent up to the campground and sailed out in front of there. It was a great day out on the water with the freestyle kit. Sailed all afternoon till my arms fell off. Nothing like an ice cold Ballena after a long day sailing. Sunday and Monday look like they are going to go off as well. Looks like some swell will also be rolling for some morning SUP sessions. The season is ramping up here! Stoked to be out on the water.

Baja…where windsurfing is only the beginning.
After a solid Norte wind last week and then a couple days of thermals we decided it was going to be our mission to finally go camping along the course of the 45th annual Score Baja 1000 off-road race. Our buddy Keyvan flew in for the mission and on Thursday afternoon we left the windsurf gear behind and loaded up the cargo van with 1 ATV, 2 Dirt bikes, 3 Surfboards and enough beer and sleeping gear to last us a couple nights in the desert. With the race starting Thursday morning at 6:30 AM, 1000 miles North in Ensenada we planned to drive 2 hrs North of La Paz where the first racers were due to blast buy us around 3AM Friday Morning. We got to La Paz at Noon on Thursday picked up Tyson’s Bike from the mechanic and went down to Rancho Viejo to grub on a kilo of arrachera (skirt steak) tacos. Being the geniuses that we are we ordered 2 pizzas delivered to the restaurant to take out to the track with us. Then we loaded up on ice and headed north. This being our first time out to Punta Marquez we only had vague directions, but we managed to find the turn off to the small town of Conquista Augraria, which we knew was some miles inland of Punta Marquez. After stopping a couple times to ask locals directions and finding out that no one knew of Punta Marquez and then figuring out that they called it El Faro (the lighthouse) we figured we were heading the right direction. Another 10 miles in on twisty branching back roads we were starting to get unsure. Just then we passed a few people camping in the bushes along the side of the road, we asked if the Baja 1000 came through here, the reply came back “YOU ARE ON THE COURSE”…………Sweet.
The further we got the more camps we passed and pretty soon after barely squeezing by a school bus on the 1 lane road we hit the Pacific. We started to look for a good spot to camp hopefully on a hill with a good view of the course and not too far from the water. Soon enough we happened on a prime spot with a view of the breaking waves on one side a long downhill section of the course ending in a hard left hand turn just below us. We were set. Broke out the motos and set off exploring. Hour after hour we watched as the locals poured in until the whole track was lined with camps the nearest of which continued to blast 80’s hits late into the night.
We partied with the locals until around midnight when we passed out around the van. At 3AM we were awoken to cheering as the first motorcycle came blasting by with massive headlights. Then I passed out again until an hour or so later when the roaring sound of the first trophy truck brought cheers from every direction. At around 6:30 AM I got up for good and cruised down to the big left hand turn to watch the trucks come by. It was intense, you could stand as close to the track as you dared too, where I was positioned the trucks would come barreling strait at you to the point where it was too late to jump out of the way and then they would manage the turn and be off in a massive cloud of dust. Some of the locals who were braver than me would try to touch the trucks as they stood at the outside of the turn.
After a few hours of watching trucks, buggies, bikes and quads roar by we decides our dust inhalation required a cleansing surf sesh. We cruised down to the beach and jumped into perfect boarshort surfing temperature water. We surfed for around two hours laughing at how perfect it was.
We wanted to head into La Paz that night to party with some of the Monster guys and already had a hotel booked, the only issue is that we would have to drive our van on the course for around 10 miles, which seemed like a pretty scary proposition given the speed the trophy trucks would be going. So we waited until the late afternoon to depart hoping to follow a caravan of locals. We didn’t find a caravan so we just had to drive looking in the rear view every 2 seconds. We managed to make it back to Conquista Agreria and pull off at a pacifico store just as 2 buggies and a bike came roaring past us. From there we made it to La Paz caught a quick nap at the hotel and headed out to party with all the racers till dawn. It was such a success we are already planning a longer trip next year. Viva Mexico!

Yesterday was Dia de Revolucion down here in Mexico and not only did a good North wind show up, but it brought along my local protégés from La Paz, Mex. 20 de Noviembre being a national holiday they had the day off of school Julian and Moi came out for their first windsurf day of the season. Having not sailed in 7 months they were a bit rusty and were also missing a few pieces of their rigs. They were really stoked when I told them to leave their stuff at the house and come down to the gear sheds and use my Naish gear. Moi went crazy over the new Freestyle 90. I have been training these kids for the last 6 years and they are now getting spocks, flakas, shuvits and forwards. Their favorite joke is that I am sponsored by Naish and they are sponsored by me, since I always make sure they have gear to use.
