Aaah yes, Alan West , a hero to the tea baggers said the recent capture of the ring leader of the Benghazi attack was no big deal, a wag the dog moment. But just last year he railed on the Obama administration for not focusing on bringing the same guy to justice. Politics at its absolute worst. Drudge runs 5-6 bs Benghazi stories a day... Now we get the guy... Crickets. |

SAN DIEGO, March 3 — After acknowledging that he had "made a very wrong turn," former Representative Randy Cunningham was sentenced in federal court here on Friday to eight years and four months in prison for taking $2.4 million in bribes from military contractors in return for smoothing the way for government contracts.
Former Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham, earlier on Friday, was sentenced later in the day to eight years and four months in federal prison for taking some $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors.
The government, which called the misconduct unprecedented for its "depth, breadth and length," said the sentence was the longest ever handed down for a member or former member of Congress in a federal corruption case.
In a halting, cracking voice before journalists, friends, political associates and others, Mr. Cunningham, 64, stood before the judge and largely read from a statement as he pleaded for leniency and, turning to prosecutors, apologized for his crime.
"I rationalized decisions I knew were wrong," said Mr. Cunningham, a Naval pilot ace in the Vietnam War and "Top Gun" instructor who parlayed those experiences into a powerful political career. "Before there must be forgiveness, there must be redemption. No man has ever been more sorry."
Judge Larry Alan Burns of Federal District Court said the former congressman's conduct, which prosecutors said included keeping a "bribe menu" with the prices of influence, undermined faith in government and wasted tax dollars. In addition to some cash payments, Mr. Cunningham bargained for gifts like a sport utility vehicle, a Tiffany statue, Bijar rugs and candelabras.
Judge Burns said Mr. Cunningham, an eight-term Republican from Rancho Santa Fe who represented the northern suburbs of San Diego, could have retired to business long ago if he wanted to make copious money but instead engaged in bid rigging and badgering officials and other witnesses to help cover his tracks.
"You made a wrong turn and continued for three to five years," Judge Burns said, referring to what prosecutors documented as the period of misconduct. "I wonder how far you would have gone.
"You undermined the opportunity and option for honest politicians to do a good job." |
Oh, why can't we find someone like Cunningham or Jack Abramoff http://www.alternet.org/story/29827/making_sense_of_the_abramoff_scandal
in the Obama administration? Could it be because bribery and influence peddling is more a Republican tradition and Obama has more integrity?
Naw, Benghazi, IRS, Benghazi. When you don't have a real scandal, chant those words and forget about "Duke" Cunningham. |

I'm just amazed that none of the left has hoisted Isobars--and his posse--on their own petard. Early on, sure that his right wing sources were speaking truth to power, the hater of the Northwest claimed:
Quote: | ALL OF THOSE ASSETS had either already been in place for days or had been moved within striking range expressly for the Libyan embassies as the three embassies came under attack. The 3- and 4-star regional/continental commanders of each of these forces and many more, plus their administration superiors at State and the White House's NSC Situation Room, watched and listened to every minute of the attack real time and took desperate "911" calls from those under fire. Every CIA and military commander was accustomed to, fully expecting, and operationally ready for an instant "GO" relayed from Panetta the instant the White House uttered it. The rescue operation differed from hundreds they had all performed before in essentially only one way: it was in the public eye, just before an election, on American soil, [with a sniveling self-centered "electoral coward" in command, I might add]. Response times for all these assets were, for example:
F-16s from Italy: 25 minutes.
Delta Force, which was moved nearer Benghazi in response to this attack but was ordered to stand down: 2.5 hours.
Marine and Army spooks specializing in exactly this scenario ... similar times.
CIA: half a damned mile.
AC-130s: 2 hours.
All were within the time of the first 9/11 assault on Benghazi, let alone the second wave. All were ordered to stand down. |
Now, after extensive hearings, largely behind closed doors, it can be concluded that Republicans either lied or leaped to conclusions without bothering to check the facts. Even Fox news finally figured it out:
Quote: | WASHINGTON – Military officers testified that there was no "stand-down order" that held back military assets that could have saved the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans killed at a diplomatic outpost and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Their testimony undercut the contention of Republican lawmakers.
The "stand-down" theory centers on a Special Operations team — a detachment leader, a medic, a communications expert and a weapons operator with his foot in a cast — that was stopped from flying from Tripoli to Benghazi after the attacks of Sept. 11-12, 2012, had ended. Instead, it was instructed to help protect and care for those being evacuated from Benghazi and from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli.
The senior military officer who issued the instruction to "remain in place" and the detachment leader who received it said it was the right decision and has been widely mischaracterized. The order was to remain in Tripoli and protect some three dozen embassy personnel rather than fly to Benghazi some 600 miles away after all Americans there would have been evacuated. And the medic is credited with saving the life of an evacuee from the attacks.
Transcripts of hours of closed-door interviews with nine military leaders by the House Armed Services and Oversight and Government Reform committees were made public for the first time on Wednesday.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the oversight panel, has suggested that Hillary Rodham Clinton gave the order, though as secretary of state at the time, she was not in the military chain of command. |
I would wait for an apology from Mike Fick, the oily guy, and the Nit Wit--but they never acknowledge even spelling mistakes. Much less the facts they make up.
Once more, Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi.
Maybe we should next review the fake stories about death panels and nobody signing up for Obama care? |

Anyone who wants much more insight on the Benghazi raid can find it Fri evening at 10:00 PM Eastern Time from the lips of CIA agents who were in the thick of it. Anyone who refuses to watch it just because it's on Fox News is an idiot, IMO. The show hosting it, Special Report, has been rated as one of the most neutral news show in all of TV Land. |

Will Mikey call Bob McDonnell any names? Bob McDonnell -- the now-convicted "family values" Republican former governor of VA, who may be looking at years locked away in prison for breach of the public trust. And because he's a bribe-taking, Rolex-wearing, Ferrari-driving slimeball. Good ol "Governor Ultrasound."
Throw the wife under the bus.
Christian values, indeed.
Don't drop the soap, Bob.
