I bought a used sail with one missing batten. Like many modern sails, the other battens are made of a rectangular piece in front, and a tubular piece in the rear. I have the materials to make up a new one. But, is there a way to determine the length of each type of material without asking the sail maker?

Not really if you want to get it as the sailmaker intended. One thing you can do to roughly approximate the bend is to remove the battens immediately above and below the one at issue. Compare the camber of these two battens, find the average and use that as your template for the one to be built. It will get you fairly close and you should be able to go sailing without any great disaster.

If you want to replicate the exact camber as designed, contact the sailmaker. They want their sails to work and will help.

Or--- post the brand/model and year of the sail and see if somebody else has the same sail and can help out with the measurements.
Once you get the specs, contact the sailmaker for the correct batten. Sailworks has a very good repair shop and might be able to help you out with the materials, as well.

Exact don't matter. You don't have their recommended mast. You mast is old and softer now. The sail is probably stretched out. You're not a gearhead.
Just approximate something in between the lower and upper battens, shove it in, and use it.
