Those poisoning Mexican's.

Stay in the States and be protected by the USDA. You can consume poison free GMO's to your hearts content and the cancer tumors are a bonus for free in 15 years.

Mexico, take common sense care. Bottled water and no ice, catch your own fish and it will never taste non processed better.and maybe learn a new language while you are at it!

Considering 88% of the US food supply is nicely poisoned(gringo secretly) Mexico looks pretty damn safe!

hepatitis from raw oysters? probably not the oysters fault but the guy serving them. food poisoning, si. only time i've ever had it was from old oysters (stateside).

eating in baja is safer than mainland mexico. this is due to the fact that the water is mostly from wells, the sandy soil is less hospitable to nasty microbes and there is less agricultural activity in the watersheds.

if your system isn't accustomed to a little extra intestinal flora and fauna it is still advisable to avoid tap water, uncooked food, ice and that stupid quartered lime that pinchis gevachos think has to accompany mexican cerveza. you don't get a lime with any other nationality no matter how tasteless the brew is. the lime juice isn't a problem but the skin of that lime can be a veritable microscopic zoo.

Im half mexican and the food/water there never seems to bother me. I like the idea of a little place where I can hangout and dont need a car. On the other hand, Ive been offered a spot on an RV in bird island basin at the end of october... that may be the cheapest/easiest of all.

While BirdIsland is fine and dandy for the old folks..note, I"m 63... you are too young and adventurous to be limited to flat water weed fin sailing for a month or two.
Instead, go to SPID, about 90 miles South, where you can flat water sail, bump n jump, wave sail, all within one mile. Plenty of free beach camping, and hotels for showers once every other night.

The guy who invited me is certainly not young... but its only a week and after the stuff ive been doing here a little steady wind/flat water and trying out some newer slalom gear doesnt sound half bad

I had a first trip to La Ventana last year. Loved the relaxed vibe down there with the mixture of ex-pats and friendly (unlike Maui) locals. If you get tired of local seafood, you can get some pretty decent gourmet pizza's and that sort of thing.

Been to all 3 places. The sailing in LV and LB is ok but doesn't compare to the conditions in Maui. It's been blow'n in Maui for tha past year and a half with just a recent South wind maybe due to El Nino. Big waves coming in today a a matter of fact - if no wind you can do a ton of other stuff - SUP surf and explore. The food is very reasonable if you know where to go for Happy Hour. Check out Mambo's burger, fries, salad and a REAL beer for 10 bucks. Gotten sick everytime in Baja. Car rental deals all the time except during holidays. Housing cheap in Kihei or Maalala good luck with your choice.

3 trips to Maui.
1 very good trip to Kaui.
11 5+ week stays on Oahu.
3 trips to PSC.
3 trips to PuntaChivato.
5 to CC and SPID.
Give me Oahu anyday, and time of the year. More consistent wind, much lighter, yes. But I weigh 150, plane up better than anyone short of the pros, like surfsailing and variety.
Hard to beat Backyards and Revelations into Velzyland for DTL wave sailing.
DHead is OK, but Makena at BlackPoint can be DTL wave sailing also. Brownies on a S.
Kahuka area blows when it's calm at Kailua AND Backyards. MaaleakahanaBeach/Hukilau.
Moks for the E winds, beach break and no crowds.
Kailua, you've seen RIP.
CrounchingLion in the winters, partly cloudy days almost always blow slide/on.
Pearl City on offshore Northerlies
Heck, I even got a good few days at YokohamaBay, end of the road SW shore.
And of course, the right reef surf spots from Haliewa to Wiamea, which the surfer's don't like for you to show up at. And that famous surfing beach called Sunset, from deep outside Backyards to the channel between Sunset and Kammieland.
Gotta admit, I didn't sail Boneyards too much, just too risky with the light inside winds.

Interesting. I never met any sailor who thought that. Even Naish moved over here.
I have only sailed a dozen times in Oahu but never smaller than 6.0, usually 7.0.
I weigh 150.
50 ft high faces in Maui during the week.
Logo to mast high in Camp One out of Kanaha Park today
Blowing 4.0 - 67 liters
