Exactly. So maybe they will remember why they left that town. It sold out to developers who didn't ski or snowboard. Anyone ever seen Naito ripping swell?

Tom and Tim, the cable park ain't a casino, or a roller coaster. One well-planned project isn't going to turn Hood River into Orlando. I should know better than anyone. The Naitos have a solid history of well-planned developments that fit in well with the community.

Tom, you're a shredding athlete. I don't know you all that well, but I know you well enough to know that when you watch Tys and Bry and Colleen ride the cable, you'll want to do it too. I'm surprised you're against this.

youwindsurf: Do you believe that, if ski lifts operated free of charge, that more people would enjoy the wonderful sport of skiing?

youwindsurf said "Mama always said two wrongs don't make a right. Just because you feel that some people have "done the same to me"

We can't quote Yo Mama, but 3 lefts do make a right. You will be feeling mighty lonely when we are all sliding around on the cable park. Eventually I suppose even you will have a season pass. Besides, what's so wrong with it? It's only 2 words; 'cable' (you watch it every day) and 'park' (your car does it). As said before, the issue would never have come up unless the Port already had a preconceived plan. This is inevitable. The public comment meeting was just a courtesy. We on the side of progress and conservatism have done this drill before. Appease the weeny lefties and then go forward in the name of the economy.

Let's review - Your claim was that no opponents to the cable park ever proposed an alternative to the binary Park=good, Park=bad nature of the discussion. I made a proposal that the Park maybe good for the community if using it was free. By making such a proposal, I simply proved that your claim that no opponent made an alternative to the binary nature of the discussion was wrong.

At no time did I ever say how many people would use the Park if there was a fee attached, nor did I ever say how many people would use the Park if it was free of charge, and I certainly made no reference to skiing. Therefore, the premise of your question quoted above is flawed and is nonsensical considering my prior posts. Perhaps your question should have been: Will more people use the cable park if there is no fee? I would use it if it were free, and I would not if I had to pay.

However, you did not ask that question. I will answer the question you did ask with a resounding YES. I would ride the ski lifts if it were free. As it is now, I don't because it is too expensive. Bring on the pow pow.

The question was not flawed. The question was this: Would more people ski if ski lifts were free?

The answer is no.

There would be significantly LESS people skiing, because there would be significantly less ski lifts. It costs money to operate a ski lift. It costs money to operate a cable park. People are willing to pay for ski passes and tickets because it's a service they deem valuable, and the ski resorts are able to offer it because people pay for it.

While I appreciate the sentiment, your suggestion is at best an empty gesture, at worst, a poorly-spun attempt to say "Hey! We're willing to talk about this!" -without ceding any real ground whatsoever.

The conditions attached make it totally and completely unfeasible. It's akin to me saying, "Sure! Borrow my paddleboard - but don't get it wet!" The condition of the offer makes the offer itself worthless.

This echoes the other "offers" the Friends have made (Go dig a hole and build a cable park on your own private land! We don't care!") in that it's clearly not feasible to do so. The cable park is part of cohesive waterfront package. Costs and revenues have been forecasted.

This is image enhancement, not opponent engagement.

I'm tired of being polite about this so I'm calling this like I see it:
A lot of older people who are retired and have the benefits of time and assets to argue about this have decided they don't like the cable park. Your decision was made before you even understood the facts, and at no point were you were willing to entertain the idea of sharing the space. You've become set in your ways, and completely un-willing to even entertain the thought that something new might be something better than what we have now. You feel entitled, and you can't really explain why. Do I think recreation areas that are wind-protected and providing of calm water are important to the community? Absolutely. Everyone deserves the right to recreate in ways they enjoy. That's why we named our group "RECREATE". There's so many options within our city limits that we can improve to provide better water access. I'm DYING to take all the energy I've directed toward this and improve the launch at the Hook or the marina or Hood River Inn beach. But you guys aren't listening to that -you only want to stop the cable because you've convinced yourself it's the devil incarnate, and that evil-doing wakeboarders are going to make you frown.

Because you have those advantages of time, money, and knowledge of how to game the political and bureaucratic system, and are willing to stretch the truth, spin the facts, or lie outright, your voices ring loud. But does that make them correct? Your champion, Mr. Brent Foster, has been caught lying already and was suspeneded by the Oregon Bar once. What makes you think he hasn't been duplicitous in these proceedings *multiple* times? Just because you guys have adopted a mob mentality, complete with threats of litigation and a hardline stance that "NO CABLEPARK WILL EXIST IN MY WATER!", does might make right?

The proponents of this project - including the Naitos - have been open and transparent about this project from the start. Willing to discuss nearly any iteration of ideas that allow the cable park to function in a financially feasible manner. But you guys won't have conversation. Threats, litigation, bullshit.

Twenty years ago you were probably battling for beach access here in the Gorge. Now, you've become the person you battled against. To me, that's really disgusting. When I was a kid, I was taught that learning to share with others was a sign of maturity. I guess you guys haven't learned that lesson yet.

youwindurf wants to wear a wetsuit of a certain color and get free cable park rides. What is next; affordable housing with no work requirements?

There was one person learning to windsurf in the basin today at noon when I drove into the Event Site. At 3 when I left there were two people SUP in the channel between the ES and the sandbar where all the kiters wade across. It was a sunny Saturday.

tumble weeds and carp enjoyed the basin today

Eric, I noticed the same thing today and many days when I drive by and chuckle about it, but tumble weeds and carp have rights too I guess. Also funny: I saw on one cable park website that they claim environmental improvement of the waterway by adding dissolved oxygen to the water because of the turbulence of the wakeboards, so maybe the fish will benefit by the cable park.

Eric and Merriam, you guys can't be offering your surveys with a straight face. If so, here's another one to add to yours. The other day I looked out my window and saw 3 paddlers in the basin and 0 kiters at the sandbar and 0 windsurfers at the event site. Three hours later I looked again and there were 7 paddlers in the basin, 0 kiters at the sandbar and 0 windsurfers at the event site. Laughing

Sunday there will be zero kiters--no wind--close to zero basin users too. Sure would like to see 150 folks rockin a cable. That would be awesome.
