This is new to me , going to start several 8--10YOs to windsurf.

80lbs and maybe 95-100lb

I will probably go with a Micro Freak by Hot Sails Maui and their rig/mast boom components, the mast is a carbon 310.

So the range of sails listed for this are 2.8--3.8m

Thoughts please ? in particular on size sail

I've used roughly the following for my kids and it works:

2 m2 for 60-70 lbs
2.5 , 80
3, 90
3.5 100

Bear in mind that the step from 2 to 2.5 is big for them. My daughter couldn't pull out a 2.5 and was ok with a 2.0.

I bought a Ezzy 2.0-2.5 kit and we are quite happy with it. The aluminium mast is light and it matters. We also have a 3.2 from Gunsail. The build quality on it is lower that the Ezzy but it works too.

These sails are monofilm, so the may not sustain school type of use. Isthmus carries the Ezzy in Dacron, so it could be a solution if needed.

For the 3.2 and 4.0 sizes, you can also go with the Aerotech Windsup sails. Once setup, they are easy and fast to rig and derig, and work great. I have a 4.0 and it's perfect for low wind.

I will finally add something about sail types. My wife is still in the learning phase. She used a 4.2 wave sail before and greatly prefers the WindSUP. The wind is much easier to feel with softer sails. From this experience, I think the sails described above are better to teach beginners than the MicroFreak or the Ripper (Sailworks). I however think that these two are far superior for intermediate or advanced kids.

Cheers

great reply.

The Ezzys with 2 sails are a pretty good deal.

teaching 8 year olds I found 1.2 sails work. But a lot of it is the weight of the boom and mast. Find the lightest you can..
