NYT

Good morning. We’re covering Republican claims about crime — plus Hurricane Idalia, Mitch McConnell and Korean fine dining.

Quote:

The politics of crime
Republican politicians often treat it as an established fact: Where they are in power, crime is low. Where Democrats are in power, crime is high.

“Republican-run cities are doing very nicely because they arrest people when you have crimes,” Donald Trump told Tucker Carlson last week.

“The cities and these left-wing states allowing criminals to run wild on our streets, that doesn’t work,” Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, said in March, citing New York in particular.

But party rule does not drive crime. Consider DeSantis’s state, Florida. Its homicide rate was roughly 50 percent higher than New York’s in 2021. Florida’s two most populous cities, Jacksonville and Miami, each had a homicide rate more than double New York City’s last year, even though both had Republican mayors.

This is not to say Republican leadership leads to more crime. You can find examples of blue states and cities doing worse than Florida, and of other red states and cities doing better. Looking at all the data, it is hard to make much of any connection between political partisanship and crime. To put it another way, prominent Republicans are misrepresenting the country’s crime problem.

Comparing places
The Republican claim is rooted in a real pattern. Big cities generally have higher crime rates than rural and suburban areas, thanks to their density and other factors. Democrats run most big cities because urban areas tend to contain more liberal voters. So when looking at the places with the most murders, you’ll often find Democratic-run cities. But that is not the whole story.

Take the 20 largest U.S. cities. The 16 run by Democratic mayors had 12.3 murders for every 100,000 people. The three Republican-run cities — Jacksonville, Fort Worth and Oklahoma City — had a rate of 11.4. There is a difference, but it is small. (I’m focused on murders because the data for them is more reliable than for other crimes, which go underreported.)

Those rates mask a lot of variation. In a ranked list of murders for all 20 cities, the three Republican-run cities fall around the middle. Some blue cities — such as New York, San Francisco and Seattle — have roughly half the murder rates as their red counterparts, while the rates in other blue cities, like Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Chicago, are two to three times as high.

That variation is the point: Whether a big city is run by Democrats or Republicans has little influence on its murder rate.

The same is true at the state level for homicides, as this map by my colleague Ashley Wu shows:

Source: C.D.C. | Data is from 2021. | By The New York Times
Once again, it’s hard to see a strong link between party rule and killings. The four deadliest states are Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and New Mexico. Two have Democratic governors, and two have Republican governors. Some red states look bad, and some look good. The same is true for blue states.

Deeper causes
So what drives higher crime rates? The state map offers a few answers. Rural areas tend to have lower crime and murder rates. (But when murders surged and then fell across the U.S. starting in 2020, rural places experienced a similar pattern.) Poverty and race play a role, both of which are historically linked to violence in cities.

Access to guns is another major factor, particularly for murders. Guns make any conflict more likely to escalate into deadly violence, and they can embolden criminals. On this issue, there is a partisan divide — Democrats are more comfortable regulating firearms — and that could help explain higher levels of violence in Republican states, especially in the South. It can also explain violence in cities, which get a lot of guns from Southern states with laxer laws.

There are many more variables. It is a point that this newsletter has made before: Crime is a complicated issue, touching on personal disputes, the economy, social services and, really, almost every other aspect of society. Only a few factors are significant enough to make a big difference by themselves — and partisanship is not one of them.

Related: Tennessee held a special legislative session on gun violence after a mass shooting at a Nashville school. Lawmakers enacted no major policy changes.

as we know the map with red and blue was a distortion of reality for political reasons. Now lets see if the media puts out this politically proper story map or they bury it.

I as a liberal if I owned media would make sure this was front page...

'DENIED:' Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert Dealt Legal Blow as Judge Refuses to Toss Scandalous Defamation Case

Quote:
'Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert was dealt a major blow by a federal judge who temporarily refused to toss out a bombshell defamation lawsuit filed against her by a political watchdog group, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

To make matters worse, Judge Kathryn A. Starnella denied Boebert’s attempt to avoid discovery — meaning the group can bombard the embattled politician with subpoenas for potentially embarrassing documents, emails, and text messages about her personal life.

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert is the target of a federal defamation lawsuit filed by a watchdog group.MEGA

David B. Wheeler, the head of American Muckrakers, filed the lawsuit in June, charging the MAGA-loving Boebert badmouthed him on national television after his group claimed she had two abortions, smoked methamphetamine, and once worked as an escort on the website SugarDaddyMeet.com.

Boebert sought to dismiss the case by claiming she had a right to publicly defend herself against the scandalous allegations she vehemently denies. She also asked the judge to “stay” or block the intrusive discovery process that opens the door into her lifestyle and mysterious past.

But court documents from the October 5 hearing showed Judge Starnella waylaid Boebert on multiple fronts.

Boebert suffered a legal blow when a Colorado federal judge refused to dismiss the case -- for now.MEGA
“ORDERED: Representative Lauren Boebert’s motion to stay discovery is DENIED,” the minutes of the hearing stated.

The judge also took the motion to dismiss the lawsuit “under advisement” and gave Wheeler two weeks to amend his complaint – a possible sign that the jurist thinks there may be enough evidence to proceed with a trial.
“The wins of the day were (1) the Judge didn't outright dismiss the case and (2) the Judge is allowing us to amend our complaint despite opposition from Boebert's attorney,” Wheeler stated in a post on his website.

As RadarOnline.com reported, Wheeler alleged Boebert used her political clout and taxpayer funds to conduct a 2022 smear campaign against him and the group, which saw a 92-percent drop in donations.

The highlight of the campaign featured an appearance on Fox News where she threatened – but never did – to file a lawsuit against Wheeler and the donors.

Wheeler has vowed to also subpoena Sean Hannity and other top dog executives at Fox News to prove Boebert was hellbent on shutting down Wheeler’s operation.

Visit the all-new RADAR SPORTS for all the on and off-field activities of the biggest names in the games.

The judge also shot down Boebert attempt to block the intrusive discovery phase of the case.MEGA

What’s more, Wheeler has submitted into evidence a trove of titillating audio recordings from potential witnesses who claim Boebert allegedly puffed on methamphetamine, talked about an unwanted pregnancy, and plied her body on an escort service website.

Boebert, who is running an uphill battle for a third term against Democrat Adam Frisch, has denied all of Wheeler’s allegations, famously declaring in court documents that she has "never been a drug addict or stripper."

If the case goes forward, Wheeler plans to grill Boebert in an action-packed deposition and “hold her feet to the fire.”

Pedophile Trump is so stupid he things cable showMSNBC is using the airwaves so should be shut down.

Donald Trump Wants Federal Government To "Come Down Hard" On MSNBC For Its Criticism Of Him

Quote:
Former President Donald Trump's attacks on the media are central to his image, but he's once again calling on the federal government to take action against NBCUniversal for its MSNBC criticism of him.

In a late night post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump complained that MSNBC "uses FREE government approved airwaves, and yet it is nothing but a 24 hour hit job" on him and "the Republican party for the purposes of ELECTION INTERFERENCE."

He also attacked Brian Roberts, the CEO of NBCU parent Comcast, as a "slimeball who has been able to get away from these constant attacks for years."

"It's the world's biggest political contribution to the Radical Left Democrats who, by the way, are destroying our Country. Our so-called ‘government' should come down hard on them and make them pay for their illegal political activity. Much more to come, watch!"

A bit of background: MSNBC is a cable network, so it does not use the public airwaves. Yet even if it was a broadcast outlet, the FCC has been clear that it will not regulate news programming content. The Fairness Doctrine, which required that broadcasters present an array of viewpoints on controversial issues, was abandoned more than 35 years ago during Ronald Reagan's presidency.

The Federal Election Commission expenditure rules, meanwhile, exclude the news media, or more specifically, "any cost incurred in covering or carrying a news story, commentary, or editorial by any broadcasting station (including a cable television operator, programmer or producer)."

Related video: Donald Trump Calls MSNBC Owner 'Slimeball' In Rant Against Network (Newsweek)

Trump's attacks on NBC, MSNBC and Roberts are nothing new. In the first year of his presidency, he was upset over the network's reporting and suggested that NBC's broadcast license be challenged. Ajit Pai, who Trump appointed to chair the FCC, said a week later that the FCC "under the law does not have the authority to revoke the license of a broadcast station based on the content of a particular newscast."

While Trump's Truth Social post was one of many, many outbursts at the news media, his suggestion of government retaliation, something that would surely raise a First Amendment challenge, also comes as many of his allies and others on the right chide tech platforms for censorship over their content moderation practices.

The Republican attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana have been challenging the Biden administration's contacts with social media platforms, claiming that they were efforts to curb misinformation about Covid vaccines and elections were in fact censoring conservative speech. The administration has argued that it is merely pointing out the spread of misinformation on platforms about urgent issues of public health and election integrity. Supreme Court last month lifted a preliminary injunction on Biden administration contacts while it will hear arguments in the case in a hearing next year.

Trump has told supporters that he would be their "retribution" in a second term, and has vowed to appoint a special prosecutor to go after Joe Biden and his family. The New York Times and The Washington Post also have been reporting in recent weeks on Trump and his allies' plans for a second term, including taking greater hold over the federal workforce.

lets see if the media puts this front page after months of covering it in the derogatory...

'The facts didn’t add up': Retailers blasted after admitting most losses not due to shoplifting

Quote:
The National Retail Federation (NRF) — the top lobbying group for retail corporations in Washington, DC — recently admitted that its data about "organized retail crime" causing huge losses was significantly off base.

In 2021, the group initially stated that out of the approximately $94.5 billion in store merchandise losses that year, roughly half was attributed to "organized" shoplifting campaigns. NRF head of asset protection and retail operations David Johnston told CNN in November that retail chains were "seeing unprecedented levels of theft coupled with rampant crime in their stores, and the situation is only becoming more dire."

However, the New York Times reported Friday that the NRF's figure of 50% of losses attributed to organized shoplifting was actually closer to 5%.

Trump Was So Upset by Jimmy Kimmel’s Jokes His White House Staff Asked Disney to Censor Him

not making front page news is it.. another right winger with no facts lying in court....

Judge orders lawyer into retirement for bringing 'frivolous' election lawsuit he knew 'lacked merit'

An attorney who represented a failed secretary of state candidate in Arizona who tried to overturn his loss in the 2022 election has been ordered to officially retire from the practice of law for at least one year.

Daniel McCauley, an Arizona lawyer with more than 30 years of experience, took up the case of Mark Finchem in 2022 after he lost to now-Secretary of State Adrian Fontes. Finchem, who lost by 120,000 votes, claimed to have been stymied by then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, who still served as a top administrator over the Grand Canyon State’s elections before her own election to governor.
However, McCauley presented no evidence in support of those claims — and now, there is a price to pay.

“It is ordered that Daniel J. McCauley is suspended from the practice of law in Arizona for 30 days — effective 30 days from the date of this order — for his conduct in violation of the Arizona Rules of Professional Conduct,” said a final judgment and order from the presiding disciplinary judge of the State Bar of Arizona, issued Monday. “It is further ordered that, upon reinstatement, [McCauley] shall immediately change his State Bar membership status to ‘retired’ and shall remain retired for a minimum of one year.”

The order notes that McCauley filed a “Verified Statement of Election Contest” on behalf of Finchem, despite not having the facts to back it up.

“Mr. McCauley admits that he lacked a sufficient factual or legal basis for several allegations advanced in those proceedings and further admits that some of his claims were false, inaccurate, frivolous, or based on speculation,” said a consent agreement that outlined the basis for the disciplinary measure.

The disciplinary judge acknowledged that McCauley said he was nearing the end of his career.

“Although the term of actual suspension is relatively brief, the Agreement requires Mr. McCauley to refrain from practicing law for at least one year thereafter, and he avows that he has no current intention of returning to the practice of law,” the statement says.

McCauley also agreed to pay the costs and expenses of the disciplinary proceedings.

At the time Finchem’s case was dismissed, McCauley hinted that he knew what was coming.

“I took this (case) because they needed somebody to do this,” McCauley said in December 2022, according to the Arizona Mirror. “I guess it does not matter if I get sanctioned here. I’m 75, semi-retired, and it will be two years or so before they get to it.”

When the judge overseeing Finchem’s case, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Melissa Julian, issued sanctions in March 2023, she recalled this comment from McCauley, and said it showed he had “some awareness that this case lacked merit” as “he expressed being less at risk of being disbarred as a result of the filing given his impending retirement.”

ultra right wing media company Sinclare broadcasting (another trust fund kid) (something like owns over 200 tv stations around the usa) has bought a liberal paper to make it support hate and trump like his TV stations.

https://baltimorebrew.com/2024/01/15/sinclair-broadcasts-david-smith-buys-baltimore-sun/

Sinclair Broadcast’s David Smith buys Baltimore Sun
Sale of Maryland’s largest circulation newspaper to the ultra-conservative Hunt Valley businessman comes as a shock to staffers and the city.

Quote:
David D. Smith, executive chairman of one of the country’s largest television station operators and a leading voice in conservative media circles, has purchased The Baltimore Sun, it was announced this evening.

The Hunt Valley businessman, who heads the Sinclair Broadcast Group, personally purchased the state’s biggest circulation print and online newspaper for an undisclosed sum from the Media News Group, a part of hedge fund Alden Global Capital.

The deal, announced in an article in The Sun, took staff by surprise.

“Don’t really have words, we got an email about a minute before this story published,” tweeted reporter Sanya Kamidi.

In buying Baltimore Sun Media Group, Smith will also acquire the Towson Times, Carroll County Times, Capital Gazette papers in Annapolis and several community outlets.

Sinclair owns Fox 45, a TV station started by Smith’s father, which is known for its focus on crime and intense criticism of city officials.

Dabbling in City Politics
Smith himself has become increasingly active in Baltimore politics, spending over $500,000 backing a group that successfully launched and won voter approval of a 2022 ballot measure that placed term limits on the mayor, comptroller and city council.

He’s currently involved in underwriting Renew Baltimore, a ballot drive to cap and lower the property tax rate.

For years a funder of Republican candidates and right-wing causes, he recently turned his energies to backing former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, using Fox 45 as a platform for promoting her return to City Hall in the upcoming Democratic Party primary against incumbent Mayor Brandon Scott.

In an interview with The Sun, Smith described himself as a First Amendment advocate who believes in “an absolute responsibility to serve the public interest.”

He said he believes that old-line media like The Sun “can be hugely profitable and successful and serve a greater public interest over time” by focusing on local and community news and adapting better to the internet and social media.

He said local ownership will benefit the struggling newspaper, which began publishing 186 years ago, but has lost circulation and hemorrhaged staff under Alden.

Among his plans are future partnerships between The Sun and Sinclair Broadcast to promote stories and co-branding.

Smith says he has brought in one partner, Armstrong Williams.

The conservative political commentator is a longtime associate of former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and 2016 Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, who is on Sinclair’s board of directors.

Statement to Sun Staff
Below is the memo to staff issued by Trif Alatzas, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Baltimore Sun Media Group:

In a few minutes, we will publish an article on baltimoresun.com with news that Baltimore Sun Media has been sold to David D. Smith, a Baltimore County businessman who is also executive chairman of Sinclair, which owns Fox 45 News and almost 200 other television stations across the country.

David personally purchased The Sun and its affiliates. This was not a Sinclair transaction. It’s the first time in 38 years The Sun has been under local ownership. I know many of you have questions about what this means going forward.

I had dinner with David, and he explained some of his ideas to help Baltimore Sun Media grow. He told me this purchase was made to support his hometown newspaper. David will visit us at St. Paul Plaza for a staff meeting to introduce himself, discuss this transition and to answer questions at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 16, on the 22nd floor. This meeting will be in person. Please make every effort to attend. Lunch will be available.

David is also setting up an email to answer questions from employees. That address, which should be live by tomorrow morning, is sunpaperconnect@baltsun.com.

Thanks for all you do.

From the Guild
The union representing Sun employees, meanwhile, released this brief statement:

“While this news came as a surprise, we are eager to learn more in the days to come,” said Christine Condon, unit chair of the Baltimore Sun Guild.

“The Sun has a proud history of journalism that holds the powerful accountable, and we would expect any new owner to help us preserve those values.
