This season has seen a jellyfish population explosion at the coast. I have been sailing and surfing the North coast of Santa Cruz for over 20 years and I have never seen anything like it. We used to get miniauture Man O War style jellys once a year in the late spring but those have all but disappeared.
Now we have these ugly brown jellys the size of a tennis ball by the millions.
The water is brown for miles and they have been there for months. I read somewhere that as the ocean becomes more acidic from dissolved CO2 that its a perfect environment for jellies. Is this the future?

"Born under a bad sign, if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all."
Just kidding. Seriously, seen a few old style big clear jelly fish at DPort and Waddell, but nothing like you describe. What break are you talking about? I'm in the water 4x a week, but kite/windsurf, not much paddling for me (simply lazy). Sure, gnarly kelp seaweed stuff, but no jellyfish hordes. Is this in town?
your mileage may vary ...
How about the fire fiasco's, twice in one week the Waddell ridge & valley has had fire bombers, trucks, and water helicopters. What's with that?

Hope the forest is ok.
I sailed Natural Bridges on Tuesday and today, Saturday, and did not see any jellies. Saw a dolphin and a sea otter and terns, but no jellies.

I sail mostly Davenport and you have to go out at least a mile to see them. They look like weeds/Kelp unless you look closely.
